Knowing that a win over Mt. San Antonio
College would move them into second place in the
South Coast Conference, the Cerritos College
women’s soccer team found the going tough, as
they were only able to gain a 1-1 tie with the
Mounties on Friday. With the draw, the Falcons
are now 3-1-2 in the SCC (11 points) and 12-2-3
on the season, while Mt. SAC is now 4-2-1 (13
points) in the conference and 11-3-1 on the
year. Long Beach City College continues to lead
the conference with 15 points, on the strength
of their 5-2-0 mark. Cerritos will now travel to
Taft College on Monday for a non-conference game before
they return home to face Los Angeles Harbor College at
4:00 p.m. on Friday. Their first meeting was
postponed and will be made up the following week.
Cerritos did take an early lead
against the Mounties, but the offense was put on hold
the remainder of the game. In the 18th
minute, freshman midfielder
Corina
Villegas (Perris HS) won the ball at
midfield and sent a pass to freshman forward
Yasmin Torres
(El Rancho HS) toward the flag. Torres then
turned and centered the ball to freshman forward
Georgina
Garcia (Norwalk HS), who headed the ball
in for her ninth goal of the season.
It was still a
1-0 game by halftime, but the Mounties were able to tie
the score in the 54th minute, as Tosha Davda
scored past freshman goalkeeper
Chantal
Cervero (Cerritos HS) with Crystal Lizama
getting the assist.
On the day,
Cervero recorded seven saves, while Mountie goalkeeper
Tatiana Gutierrez posted 15 saves. |
