Usually when a team
goes two games without winning, it’s not much cause for
concern. But, for the Cerritos College women’s soccer
team, that constitutes a long slump. After going 0-1-1
in their last two contests, the Falcons responded with a
2-0 non-conference win at Taft College on Monday. With
the victory, the team is now 13-2-3 on the year and will
resume South Coast Conference play on Friday when they
host Los Angeles Harbor at 4:00 p.m.
In the win over the Cougars, the
Falcons did not allow their opponent a shot on goal,
while they sent 17 toward the net. Cerritos picked up an
early goal in the 11th minute, as freshman
Monique
Cisneros (Mayfair HS) fed a pass to
sophomore
Rebecca Juarez (Jurupa Valley HS) at the
top of the 18-yard box. Doing what she does best, Juarez
chipped the ball back to Cisneros, who chest-trapped it
and finished the play with a goal. The goal by Cisneros
was her 15th on the season, while Juarez
picked up her 10th assist of the season to
lead the team. Last season, Juarez registered 17 helpers
to set a new freshman and career record, while she is
closing in on the sophomore record of 12 assists, set by
Amy Lindborg in 1996.
In the second half, the Falcons put
more pressure on the Taft defense, as they moved the
ball deep into the Cougar zone. Freshman
Georgina
Garcia (Norwalk HS) sent a shot that was
blocked, but the rebound went to freshman
Brenda
Ramirez (Buena Park HS), who drilled it
into the net for the final goal of the game. Freshman
goalkeeper
Chantal
Cervero (Cerritos HS) was not tested the
entire game and finished with her fifth shutout of the
season. |
