For the second time in
four days, the Cerritos College women’s soccer team
posted a shutout against Los Angeles Harbor College in a
South Coast Conference game. The Falcons (15-2-3
overall, 5-2-1 SCC), who are ranked #1 in Southern
California, moved into first place in conference play
with 16 points after the win. The team will now travel
to Pasadena City College for a 3:00 p.m. game on
Tuesday.
After a scoreless first half against the Seahawks,
Cerritos turned up the heat and got on the board in the
50th minute. Freshman
Vanessa
Monreal (Lynwood HS) sent a pass from the
end line to the top of the box to freshman
Corina
Villegas (Perris HS), who scored on a
shot into the far post. It was her 20th goal
of the season, which made her just the fourth player in
school history to reach that milestone. But Villegas
wasn’t done yet, as she scored in the 72nd
minute on a deflection off a shot from sophomore
Rebecca Juarez
(Jurupa Valley HS). The 21 goals for Villegas is
now tied for second for the most goals scored in one
season by a Cerritos player. The school record of 32 was
set by Kelly Walker in 1996, the school’s second
year of soccer.
Before the game
was over, the Falcons picked up another goal, when
Juarez sent a pass through to freshman
Yasmin Torres
(El Rancho HS), who them poked the ball the
opposite direction and passed the Seahawk goalkeeper.
Cerritos freshman goalkeeper
Chantal
Cervero (Cerritos HS) didn’t see much
action her way and had little trouble posting her
seventh shutout on the year. |
