In their 5-0 South
Coast Conference win on Tuesday, the Cerritos College
women’s soccer team showed how dominant they can be at
both ends of the field. The Falcons controlled a good
Pasadena City College team by pelting the Lancer
goalkeeper with 23 shots, while the duo of freshmen
Corina
Villegas (Perris HS) and
Monique
Cisneros (Mayfair HS) each scored twice
for the Falcons.
The win moves
Cerritos one point ahead of both Mt. San Antonio College
and Long Beach City College for first place in the SCC
standings. The Falcons, ranked #1 in Southern California
and #5 in the nation, have 20 points with their 6-1-2
record, while both the Mounties and Vikings are 6-2-1
and have 19 points. Cerritos (16-2-3 overall) will now
travel to El Camino for a 4:00 p.m. game on Friday and
have just three regular season games remaining.
Along with their
dominance offensively, the team did a good job of
shutting down the Lancers, who have shown their ability
to score. As usual, sophomore midfielder
Rebecca Juarez
(Jurupa Valley HS) controlled the ball on
offense, while sophomore
Ana Gonzalez
(Dominguez HS/Allegheny (PA) College), along with
freshmen
Celia Ramirez (Buena Park HS) and
Gabriela
Aguilar (Santa Fe HS) helped freshman
goalkeeper
Chantal
Cervero (Cerritos HS) post her fourth
shutout in a row and eighth on the season, as she made
seven saves.
In the 16th
minute, the Falcons scored their first of three
first-half goals when freshman
Georgina
Garcia (Norwalk HS) won the ball at
midfield and the sent a pass to Villegas down the line.
Villegas then took on two players and drilled a shot
inside the near post for a goal. Her second goal of the
half came when freshman
Desiree
Cardenas (West Covina HS) sent a clearing
pass all the way to a streaking Villegas, who beat two
Lancer players and then beat the Pasadena City
goalkeeper in a one-on-one situation. The two goals now
give Villegas 23 goals, which sets a new freshman school
record. It also moves her closer to the single-season
record of 32, set by Kelly Walker in 1996.
Before the end
of the first half, Cisneros picked up her first of two
goals, as she scored from outside the 18-yard box on a
pass from Villegas. Juarez gave Cerritos a 4-0 lead when
she took the ball all the way from midfield, dribbled
past all of the Pasadena City players, putting her in on
a breakaway, where she scored. Cisneros closed out the
scoring in the 75th minute, as Gonzalez fed a
nice pass through two defenders, and after she caught up
with the ball, scored her 17th goal of the
season. |
