The Cerritos College women’s soccer team went back up to
Oxnard College to play in the Sea Breeze Tournament this
past weekend just one day after recording a 10-0 win
over the host Condors. The Falcons were scheduled to
face perennial powerhouse Cypress College the first day
and then Northern California power Sierra College the
next day. After a sluggish first half against Cypress,
the Falcons scored twice in the second half and then
surrendered a strange late goal to finish in a 2-2 tie
with the Chargers. Cerritos went on to win in penalty
kicks, 3-0, but the game goes down as a tie contest. The
Falcons came back the next day and jumped out to a 3-0
lead over the Wolverines, before settling for a 5-2 win.
This week,
Cerritos (3-0-1) will host Orange Coast College on
Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. in their home opener. They will
follow that will a game against defending national
champion Richland (TX) College on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
and then will host Yuba College at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
In the tie game
against Cypress, Cerritos received two second half goals
from freshman
Monique
Cisneros (Mayfair HS) to give the team a
2-1 lead. She picked up the first goal in the 67th
minute on a throw-in from freshman Susana Mendoza,
while freshman
Yasmin Torres
(El Rancho HS) dribbled in and sent the ball into
the center for Cisneros, who drilled in the go-ahead
goal in the 72nd minute.
The Falcons
dominated the second half, as they kept the ball in the
Charger territory the entire second half. However, late
in the game, the ball was sent toward Cerritos
goalkeeper
Chantal
Cervero (Cerritos HS), who appeared to be
shoved in the back by a Cypress player with no call.
With all of the players stopping the action in
anticipation of the whistle, Cypress took advantage of
the loose ball and kicked it into the net. The goal was
allowed because the whistle never blew.
When regulation
ended, the players lined up for penalty kicks, which
seemed to stymie the lead official.
“The ref asked
why we were lining up for penalty kicks and I told him
it was because we were tied, 2-2,” said head coach
Ruben
Gonzalez. “I then asked the official why he
didn’t blow the whistle on that play when Cypress scored
their second goal. He told me he didn’t make the call
because he thought we were winning 3-0. If he blew the
whistle, they might not have scored and we would have
won the game.”
The Falcons made sure they were
leading 3-0 in their next game against Sierra, as
freshman
Corina Villegas (Perris HS) scored in the
18th minute, while Cisneros gave the team a
2-0 lead right before halftime. After Cisneros put the
team up 3-0 in an assist from Villegas, the Wolverines
scored the next two goals before freshman
Desiree
Cardenas (West Covina HS) put the game
out of reach with two goals in the second half. |
