The Cerritos College women’s soccer team continued their
relentless offensive attack and extended their unbeaten
streak to start the season to five games (4-0-1) after a
4-1 non-conference home win against Orange Coast College
on Tuesday. The Falcons, who defeated the Pirates, 1-0
last year in a non-conference game, held a 2-1 lead at
intermission and then sent a barrage of shots in the
second half, with two finding the back of the net. The
team will get the biggest test of the program’s history
on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. when they play host to
Richland (TX) College, the defending NJCAA/adidas
Division III National Champion and top-ranked program in
the country this season.
In the win over
the Pirates, Cerritos found themselves down, 1-0 after
freshman goalkeeper
Chantal
Cervero (Cerritos HS) came deep out of
the net to field a ball and mishandled it, allowing it
to land on the foot of Shannon Arnold. With the net wide
open, Arnold was able to score an easy goal, much to the
dismay of Cervero, who made eight saves in the game.
It only took the
Falcons three minutes to tie the game, when freshman
Georgina
Garcia (Norwalk HS) scored on a loose
ball in front of the net. That seemed to spark the team,
as their offensive intensity increased, which created
more scoring opportunities heading into the second half.
At the start of the second half, freshman
Maria Zubiate
(La Puente HS) dribbled the ball into the box and
fed sophomore
Rebecca Juarez
(Jurupa Valley HS), who drilled the ball into the
net for a comfortable 3-1 advantage.
Both teams
played aggressively, but the majority of the physical
play came in front of Pirate goalkeeper Katie Johnson,
who was peppered with 28 shots on goal and made 15 saves
on the day. Needing to get the ball down to the Cerritos
side of the field late in the game, Johnson came out to
play a loose ball and saw Falcon freshman
Vanessa
Monreal (Lynwood HS) beat her to the ball
and lifted a shot over Johnson’s head for the fourth
goal of the game in the 88th minute. Cardenas
was credited with the assist on the play. |
