When the next NSCAA/adidas women’s soccer rankings come
out, Cerritos College is assured a big bump in the
polls. Based on their performance over the weekend, the
Falcons will surely improve on their 13th-ranked
position after wins over #1-ranked Richland (TX) College
(5-1) on Saturday and a 6-2 win over #9-ranked Yuba
College on Sunday. With the victories, Cerritos is now
5-0-1, as they head off on their first out-of-state trip
in the program’s history. The team will be heading south
to play in the Florida Showcase against two community
college Division 1 programs. Schools that offer
scholarships are deemed Division 1, while those that
don’t are Division III. The Falcons are scheduled to
play Polk (FL) College, currently the #1-ranked Division 1
program and Catonsville (MD) Community College, another
ranked team in Division 1.
Against Yuba on
Sunday, Cerritos found themselves down 1-0 in the 31st
minute after a defensive giveaway left freshman
goalkeeper
Chantal
Cervero (Cerritos HS) all alone in the
box. The Forty-Niners scored their goal just two minutes
after Falcon freshman
Corina
Villegas (Perris HS) drilled a shot that
went off the crossbar. But it only took Cerritos six
minutes to tie the game, as freshman
Alyesse Orr
(La Mirada HS) scored on a one-timer in the
middle of the box after receiving a solid pass from
Villegas.
The aggressive
play of the Falcons, coupled with their amazing team
speed everywhere on the field, allowed them to strike
twice in the first four minutes of the second half and
hold a comfortable 3-1 advantage. Freshman
Georgina
Garcia (Norwalk HS) put the team on top
for good after she got a nice pass from sophomore
Rebecca Juarez
(Jurupa Valley HS), who worked her way around the
Yuba defender with her speed. Freshman
Maria Zubiate
(La Puente HS) accounted for the next goal, with
freshman
Monique Cisneros (Mayfair HS) collecting
the assist.
It was a 4-1
game in the 63rd minute on a great
positioning goal by Villegas, who turned and kicked the
ball into the upper part of the net, while she gave the
team a 5-1 lead just 10 minutes later. After stealing
the ball in the Yuba box, Villegas sent a hard, low shot
to Forty-Niner goalkeeper Lia Mickey, who had the ball
roll between her legs before she could get down to stop
the ball.
The Falcons then
allowed a goal to Alisha Yuhasz, who scored on a free
kick that went over Cervero’s head. Juarez closed out
the scoring on the day with a shot that deflected off a
Yuba player into the net. |
