After a tight first
half, in which the Cerritos College women’s soccer team
was tied 1-1 with San Bernardino Valley College in a
non-conference game on Wednesday afternoon, the Falcons
turned on their offensive firepower by scoring three
times in the second half and recorded a 4-1 win. The
victory improves the team’s record to 8-1-1 overall
while the Wolverines dropped to 6-1-0. The Falcons will
now travel to Antelope Valley College for a rare 7:00
p.m. contest on Friday.
After a sloppy first half in which
the team was out-shot, 6-5, Cerritos started to connect
on their short passes and found the results promising,
peppering San Bernardino Valley goalkeeper Jacqueline
Jaime with 13 shots in the second half. By contrast, the
team did not allow a shot on goal in the second half.
The first strike in the second half came when freshman
Alyesse Orr
(St. Joseph HS) sent a pass to sophomore
playmaker
Rebecca Juarez (Jurupa Valley HS) deep in
Wolverine territory. Juarez quickly passed to freshman
Corina
Villegas (Perris HS), who was tackled in
the box by Brianna Jones. Villegas finished off the play
by converting the penalty kick in the 61st
minute for a 2-1 lead.
Cerritos
continued to control the ball in San Bernardino Valley
territory and put an insurance goal in the net in the 72nd
minute when freshman
Desiree
Cardenas (West Covina HS) lofted the
ball toward the goalkeeper, who tried to grab it after
one bounce. But, Villegas was able to head the ball past
Jaime before the ball came down and scored. The Falcons
closed out the scoring in the 79th minute
when Villegas dribbled across the top of the box and
sent a ball to Juarez. Her left-footed shot was then
deflected off a SBVC defender into the net for a goal.
San Bernardino
Valley scored their lone goal in the 30th
minute on a penalty kick by Jones, while freshman
Monique
Cisneros (Mayfair HS) gave Cerritos an
early 1-0 lead when she scored on a turn-and-kick shot
on a one-touch pass. |
