As the Cerritos
College women’s soccer team prepares to defend their
first-ever South Coast Conference championship from last
season, they had some unfinished business to take care
of in their final non-conference game. The Falcons,
ranked sixth in the country by the NCSAA/adidas polls,
posted a convincing 8-0 win at Antelope Valley College
on Friday night. The win improved the team’s record to
9-1-1, and they will open conference play at home on
Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. against Mt. San Antonio College.
The team scored their goals in
bunches and broke a scoreless tie with three tallies in
the span of five minutes. Cerritos opened the scoring in
the 25th minute when sophomore
Rebecca Juarez
(Jurupa Valley HS) sent a pass into Marauder
territory to freshman
Desiree
Cardenas (West Covina HS). It was a quick
touch pass to freshman
Yasmin Torres
(El Rancho HS) that was the key on the play, with
Torres dribbling the ball to the corner of the box and
placed a shot into the upper corner of the net for a
goal. Cardenas had a hand in the next goal three minutes
later, as she crossed a nice pass into the box for
freshman
Georgina Garcia (Norwalk HS), who scored
her first of two goals. Two minutes later, Juarez had
her hard shot deflect off the post, but right to Garcia,
who drilled it home for a 3-0 lead.
In the second
half, the Falcons scored five more times, and freshman
Corina
Villegas (Perris HS) had a hand in all
five of them. Villegas scored in the 67th and
76th minute, while she assisted on the three
other goals, as Cerritos pelted the Antelope Valley nets
with 26 shots in the game. Garcia assisted on freshman
Maria
Zubiate’s (La Puente HS) goal in the 53rd
minute, while freshman
Samantha
Ramirez (California HS) scored on a
one-timer from the 18-yard box on a pass from Villegas.
The final goal of the game was scored on a corner kick
from Villegas in the 88th minute, as her kick
was headed into the goal by freshman
Brenda
Ramirez (Buena Park HS), who was playing
her first game of the season. Freshman goalkeeper
Chantal
Cervero (Cerritos HS) earned her second
shutout of the season and was only asked to make three
saves in the game. |
