In the first half of
their South Coast Conference opener, the Cerritos
College women’s soccer team was faced with an aggressive
Mt. San Antonio College team. After getting on the board
in the ninth minute, the Falcons had difficulty
generating much offense. But things turned around
completely in the second half for both teams, as the two
squads combined to score eight goals in the span of 26
minutes. Five of those goals were scored by Cerritos
(10-1-1 overall, 1-0-0 SCC), who posted a 6-3 victory.
The Falcons will now get a break until next Tuesday when
they travel to Los Angeles Harbor College for a 4:00
p.m. game.
Holding on to their 1-0 lead, thanks to a goal from
freshman
Monique Cisneros (Mayfair HS), the
Falcons turned their efforts to sophomore
Rebecca Juarez
(Jurupa Valley HS), who is widely considered to
be one of the best community college players in the
country. All Juarez did was control every loose ball,
work the action to the outside of the field and send the
ball in with a great touch that helped spring her
teammates for high percentage scoring opportunities.
When not setting up plays, Juarez was scoring two of her
own, with the first coming in the 50th minute
to give Cerritos a 2-0 lead. Juarez jumped on a loose
ball at the top of the box and in one motion, turned and
kicked the ball into the upper corner of the goal for
her fourth tally of the season.
Mt. San Antonio
(7-2-0 overall, 0-1-0 SCC) seemed to have trouble with
their communication, as freshman
Corina
Villegas (Perris HS) scored her team-high
16th goal of the season when she was able to
get through the Mountie defense and send a shot under
the legs of Mt. SAC goalie Julie Scott. It was a 4-1
game in the 67th minute after freshman
Vanessa
Monreal (Lynwood HS) scored with three
Mountie defenders and the goalkeeper all fighting for
the ball inside the box after the defense was unable to
clear the ball.
Despite the
offensive explosion by Cerritos, Mt. SAC fought right
back and scored two goals off corner kicks, with Falisha
Ramirez picking up her second goal of the game on a shot
she lifted from outside the box over the head of Falcon
goalkeeper
Chantal
Cervero (Cerritos HS).
On the day,
Juarez scored twice, while Villegas, Cisneros, Monreal
and freshman
Alyesse Orr (St. Joseph HS) all scored
for the Falcons, while Cervero made eight saves. |
