Fresh off winning
their second straight state championship and being
named the national champions, the Cerritos College
women's soccer team had two of their players earn
All-American honors by the NSCAA. Sophomore
Corina
Villegas (Perris HS), who was
a 2nd Team All-American last year, was named 1st
Team this season, while sophomore
Monique
Cisneros (Mayfair HS) was a
2nd Team selection. Cisneros, who missed the state
tournament due to an injury, was named the South
Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Year, while
both were 1st Team All-Far West selections.
Sophomore
defender/forward
Desiree
Cardenas (West Covina HS), who
stepped up into a forward position with the loss of
Cisneros, was a 2nd Team All-Far West selection as
well as being named the conference's Defensive
Player of the Year.
Villegas, who
scored three goals in the team's 4-2 overtime win
over Santa Rosa College in the state championship
game, was named the tournament's Most Valuable
Player for the second year in a row. She concluded
the season with 21 goals and a team-leading 18
assists, while Cisneros scored a school-record 36
goals before going down with her injury, while
Cardenas contributed four goals and nine assists.
Joining the trio
on the All-SCC 1st Team were sophomore
Tara
Corcoran (Bonita HS/Cal State Long
Beach), along with freshmen
Mayra
Garcia (Locke HS) and
Liliana Leos
(Southeast HS). Corcoran was another
integral part of the team's state title with her
clutch defense, along with her ability to score off
set pieces. She finished with four goals and an
assist, while the team also had to play most of the
state tournament games without Leos, who was also
injured. Leos was a big part of the offense, as she
scored 12 goals and assisted on 14 others, while
Garcia added five goals and seven assists.
