Corina
Villegas (Perris HS), a
sophomore forward on the Cerritos College women's
soccer team, has had two years for the record books.
Not only has Villegas been named a National Soccer
Coaches Association of America Division III
(non-scholarship) All-American both years, she was
also selected the Most Valuable Player of the state
tournament, with the Falcons winning back-to-back
championships. She capped off her career by being
named the NSCAA Player of the Year, which was
announced on Thursday, December 18.
She will be
honored, along with sophomore teammate
Monique
Cisneros (Mayfair HS), a 2nd
Team All-American selection, at the All-American
Luncheon, which will be held in St. Louis, MO on
January 17, 2009 as part of the NSCAA Convention.
As a freshman,
Villegas tied the school's single-season
goal-scoring record with 32, en route to the team's
first state championship in school history. This
past season, Villegas took more of a pass-first
approach, but still managed 21 goals and set the
school record with her 18 assists. She scored three
times in the team's 4-2 overtime win over Santa Rosa
College in the state championship game, including
both overtime goals. Cisneros went on to break the
goal-scoring record with 36, with Villegas finishing
her career with 53 goals and a school-record 35
assists. The team went unbeaten on the year to
capture their second state title, while they were
named the national champions. They finished the year
ranked #2 in the country her freshman year.
