Cerritos
College sophomore women's soccer player
Corina Villegas capped off
her
career by being named the California Community College Athlete Association (CCCAA) December
Female Athlete of the Month. Villegas, who was
also named the National Soccer Coaches
Association of America (NSCAA) Junior College
Division III (non-scholarship) Player of the
Year, helped lead the Falcons to their second
straight state championship and their first
unbeaten season in school history.
Villegas, the
Most Valuable Player of the state tournament,
scored three goals in the team's 4-2 overtime
win over Santa Rosa College in the state
championship game, including both goals in
overtime. The win finished off an unbeaten
season where the Falcons went 22-0-4 on the year
and won their third straight South Coast
Conference championship. After setting the
school-record for most goals in a season as a
freshman (32), Villegas looked more to pass this
season, but still finished with 21 goals. Her 18
assists this season set a new school-record,
while her 35 career assists are also a school
record.
Back in October, sophomore
teammate
Monique Cisneros was named the
Athlete of the Month, while Villegas earned the
award back in November of 2007. She is also the
fifth Cerritos College athlete to be honored as
the Athlete of the Month since its inception in
September of 2005.
The CCCAA Athlete of the Month program is
coordinated by the California Community College
Sports Information Association (CCCSIA) and the
CCCAA.
