The Cerritos
College women's soccer team increased their lead in
the South Coast Conference to three points after
forging a 1-1 tie with host El Camino College on
Tuesday afternoon. The Falcons, 7-0-2 in SCC play,
have 23 points and lead second place Mt. San Antonio
(6-1-2, 20 points), who had a bye. Ranked #1 in the
country, Cerritos (14-0-4 overall) will now host
Pasadena City College at 1:00 p.m. on Friday.
"Because we won
the state championship last year, teams come out and
play their best games against us each time," said
head coach
Ruben
Gonzalez. "But if we aren't playing
with the intensity we need, we end up missing
scoring chances and finish in a tie. Honestly, this
feels like a loss because of the way we played."
The Warriors broke
a scoreless tie seven minutes into the second half,
while the Falcons evened the score in the 63rd
minute when sophomore forward
Monique Cisneros (Mayfair
HS) scored her 31st goal of the year. The goal
puts her one tally away from tying the single-season
record of 32 goals in a season, set by teammate
Corina Villegas (Perris HS)
last year and Kelly Walker during
the 1996 season.
On the play,
sophomore midfielder
Elba
Menjivar (Monroe HS/Pasadena City
College) saw her bicycle kick from inside the
box land short of the goal. But Cisneros was right
there to get control of the ball and scored the
game-tying goal.
Cerritos played
the game without Villegas, while freshman forward
Liliana Leos (Southeast HS)
played only the first half. The two have combined to
compliment Cisneros by scoring 23 goals and
assisting on 29 others. Sophomore goalkeeper
Chantal
Cervero (Cerritos HS) posted
five saves to earn the draw.
