The Cerritos
College women's soccer team moved one step closer to
defending their South Coast Conference championship
after recording a 4-1 win at home against Pasadena
City College on Friday. The Falcons (15-0-5 overall,
8-0-2) lead Mt. San Antonio College by three points
with two games remaining. The two will square off in
Walnut on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.
After taking a 1-0
lead in the 12th minute when sophomore forward
Monique Cisneros (Mayfair HS)
dribbled the ball downfield until sending a pass to
sophomore forward
Desiree
Cardenas (West Covina HS), who
scored into the far corner. However, the Lancers
were able to tie the game in the 34th minute when
Melissa Fudge turned in a tremendous individual
effort. She moved through traffic and then unleashed
a shot that landed just under the crossbar and into
the net past sophomore goalkeeper
Chantal Cervero (Cerritos
HS).
The momentum of
the game changed in the second half, with the
Falcons taking control of the tempo and maintained
possession of the ball. The sent a barrage of shots
at Lancer goalkeeper Dione Bonilla, who just
couldn't stop all of the shots.
The eventual
game-winning goal came in the 76th minute when
freshman
Salina
Flores (Los Alamitos HS) sent
a perfect ball off a corner kick that sophomore
defender
Tara
Corcoran (Bonita HS/Cal State Long
Beach) headed into the net. The pressure
continued until sophomore forward
Corina Villegas (Perris
HS) scored in the 82nd minute off a nice pass
from sophomore midfielder
Alyesse Orr
(St. Joseph HS). The Falcons added their
fourth goal in the 90th minute when freshman
Liliana Leos
(Southeast HS) stole the ball and started a
rush up the field. She passed the ball to sophomore
Betty Cornejo (Bellflower HS),
who in turn passed the ball to sophomore
Monique
Cisneros (Mayfair HS), who
scored her record-tying 32nd goal.
Cisneros tied the
single-season goal scoring record set last season by
Villegas and Kelly Walker during the 1996 season.
Freshman
goalkeeper
Tiffany
Hollis (Lakewood HS) earned
the win with her play in the second half, which
included two excellent saves against Fudge in the
early stages of the second half. It was Hollis who
prevented the Lancers from taking the lead, while it
also sparked the offense to their three-goal barrage
in the second half. Hollis made four saves, while
Cervero posted three stops.
