In their final
regular season before they begin defense of their
state championship, the Cerritos College women's
soccer team recorded a 3-0 win over Long Beach City
College at home on Friday afternoon. The Falcons,
ranked #1 in the country and in the state, will open
the Southern California Regional Playoffs at home
next Saturday and will find out who their opponent
will be after the seeding meeting on Tuesday. With
the win, Cerritos is now 17-0-4 overall and finished
the SCC season with a 10-0-2 record.
Jumping on the
Vikings from the start, the Falcons had a 3-0 lead
by intermission and held Long Beach City at bay the
rest of the game for their 14th shutout of the
season, setting a new school record.
Sophomore
Monique
Cisneros (Mayfair HS) added to
her school record for most goals in a season and
career in the 10th minute, scoring her 34th of the
year and 55th in her career. She scored on Marilyn
Montez from short range after receiving a pass from
sophomore
Elba
Menjivar (Monroe HS/Pasadena City
College). Just seven minutes later, sophomore
Yasmin Torres (El Rancho HS)
brought the ball up the right side and drew the
defense into her. After seeing an opening, she
passed the ball to Menjivar, whose shot when through
a Viking defender and replacement goalkeeper Ileana
Aparicio.
Sophomore
Gabriela
Aguilar (Santa Fe HS) scored
the team's final goal on a pass from sophomore
Samantha Ramirez (California HS)
in the 32nd minute. The defense wasn't really
tested, with sophomore goalkeeper
Chantal
Cervero (Cerritos HS) and
freshman
Tiffany
Hollis (Lakewood HS) each
making two saves to share in the shutout. It was the
sixth time the two had combined to shutout an
opponent.
