Sophomore
Corina
Villegas (Perris HS) scored
two goals and assisted on another to lead the
Cerritos College women's soccer team to a 3-0 win at
home on Saturday over San Bernardino Valley College
(15-7-3) in the first round of the Southern
California Regional Playoffs. The Falcons (18-0-4),
the top-seeded team in the playoffs, will now host
Los Angeles Pierce College on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m.
in a second round game. LA Pierce (19-3-3), the
#9-seed, defeated Moorpark College in a shootout in
their first round game.
Villegas scored
her first of two goals in the 33rd minute off a
corner kick after freshman
Salina
Flores (Los Alamitos HS) sent
the ball into the box. Villegas controlled the kick
and scored giving Cerritos a 1-0 lead. In the second
half, Villegas fed sophomore
Monique
Cisneros (Mayfair HS) with a
ball through the box in the 49th minute, with
Cisneros scoring her 35th goal of the season.
The defense did
their part throughout the game and goalkeepers
Chantal Cervero (Cerritos
HS) and
Tiffany
Hollis (Lakewood HS) were only
required to make seven saves. Playing without
freshman
Liliana Leos
(Southeast HS), who contributed 13 goals
and 16 assists on the year, the Falcons worked the
ball around and took advantage of playing a team
they faced earlier in the season. Cerritos defeated
the Wolverines, 3-2 a month ago.
Villegas closed
out the scoring in the 72nd minute after she worked
her way around three players and sent a shot from 30
yards out that deflected off the goalkeeper and into
the net. Freshman
Samantha
Ramirez (California HS) was
credited with the assist.
