Last year,
Corina
Villegas (Perris HS) tied the
school record for goals in a season (32) from her
midfielder position, and helped lead the Cerritos
College women's soccer team to their first state
championship in the program's history. Playing more
of a defensive and ball distribution role this
season, the team has continued to play extremely
well, but this year it's been
Monique
Cisneros (Mayfair HS) who has
led the team in scoring. After putting four more
into the net in the team's 7-0 South Coast
Conference win over Los Angeles Harbor College on
Friday, Cisneros appears to be a lock to set the new
scoring record.
With her 30 goals
this year, Cisneros will surely break the
single-season mark, while her 51 career goals is a
new record, breaking the old mark of 46 set by
Kelly Walker (1995-96). The Falcons
(14-0-3 overall, 7-0-3) have four more regular
season games remaining and then the playoffs, as the
team looks to defend their state title. They will
travel to El Camino College for a 1:00 p.m. game on
Tuesday.
The four goals by
Cisneros was the fourth time this year she has
accomplished the feat, which includes a six-goal
game against College of the Desert.
In the win over
the Seahawks, Cisneros scored three times in the
first half to give the Falcons a 3-0 lead, while she
added another in the second half. She opened the
scoring in the fourth minute after a nice crossing
pass from sophomore
Elba
Menjivar (Monroe HS/Pasadena City
College), while in the 11th minute, sophomore
Samantha Ramirez (California HS)
sent a pass through the box, where Cisneros chipped
it in for a goal. Freshman
Salina
Flores (Los Alamitos HS) sent
a long ball deep into Harbor territory to Cisneros,
who took it the rest of the way for a natural hat
trick.
The second half
started the same as the first, with Villegas picking
up her 11th goal of the year on a give-and-go from
sophomore
Alysse Orr
(St. Joseph HS). Cisneros got her fourth
goal of the game in the 50th minute when freshman
Nadia Gonzalez (Hawthorne HS)
sent a crossing pass. Gonzalez and Cisneros worked
together for the team's sixth goal, as Gonzalez
scored on a breakaway, while freshman
Lily Leos
(Southeast HS) closed out the scoring in
the 70th minute. After Villegas fed her the ball,
Leos dribbled around the goalkeeper to score.
The goalkeeping
duo of freshman
Tiffany
Hollis (Lakewood HS) and
sophomore
Chantal
Cervero (Cerritos HS) combined
for their fourth shutout together, while it was the
team's 12th on the year. They are now one shutout
away from tying the school record of 13 set in the
2006 season.
