Although she
played just 27 minutes in the game, sophomore
forward
Monique
Cisneros (Mayfair HS) was able
to score a school-record six goals, as the Cerritos
College women's soccer team scored a record 18 goals
in an 18-0 non-conference win at College of the
Desert on Monday afternoon. The Falcons (6-0-3),
ranked #2 in the country by the National Soccer
Coaches Association of American (NSCAA) Division III
(non-scholarship) will now open defense of their
South Coast Conference title on October 3rd when
they travel to East Los Angeles College.
"It was just one
of those games where you don't want anyone to get
hurt," said head coach
Ruben Gonzalez.
"I used this game as a chance for everyone to play,
but you can't tell your players to not try. I really
felt bad because of the score, but I instructed the
players to work on their passing skills, but when
the opportunity presented itself for the players,
they shot the ball and scored. I want the team to
move forward and focus on our next game."
Eight different
players scored for the Falcons, including the six by
Cisneros. The total broke the old school record of
four goals set by Lina Valderrama
(2005), Grisell Ramirez (2002),
Kelly Walker (twice in 1996) and
Erin Kingsbury (1995). Joining her
in scoring multiple goals were freshman forward
Liliana Leos (Southeast HS),
who tallied four goals, while sophomore midfielder
Alyesse Orr (St. Joseph HS)
scored three times.
With the score
11-0 at halftime, Gonzalez rotated in seldom used
players and several of them went on to add goals of
their own. Sophomore
Desiree
Cardenas (West Covina HS),
along with freshmen
Stephanie
Lopez (Pioneer HS),
Nadia
Gonzalez (Hawthorne HS),
Crystal Garcia (John Glenn HS)
and
Denise
Hernandez (El Rancho HS) all
scored once. Three of the goal scorers on the day
scored their first goals of the season.
A quartet of
players picked up a pair of assists, along with
Leos. Sophomores
Corina
Villegas (Perris HS),
Yasmin
Torres (El Rancho HS) and
Elba Menjivar (Monroe HS/Pasadena
City College) all picked up two assists.
Freshman goalkeeper
Tiffany
Hollis (Lakewood HS) made one
save in the second half of the game and chipped in
with an assist, while sophomore goalkeeper
Chantal
Cervero (Cerritos HS) was not
asked to make a save in the first half.
