Continuing where
they left off at the end of last season when they
won their second straight state championship and
first National Championship, the Cerritos College
women's soccer team opened their 2009 season by
posting a pair of shutout wins. The Falcons (2-0-0)
competed in the Sea Breeze Tournament in Oxnard and
registered a 5-0 win over Sierra College on Saturday
and then followed that with a 4-0 win over Citrus
College on Sunday. The team will now travel to Taft
College on Friday for a 3:00 p.m. non-conference
match.
In the win over
Sierra, Cerritos needed only three minutes to get on
the board when freshman
Jutine
Telles (St. Paul HS) scored on
a shot from about 45 yards out after receiving a
pass from freshman
Ruby Leon
(Fontana HS). Midway through the first
half, it was a 2-0 Falcon when Leon scored from
close range after sophomore
Nancy
Gandarilla (Long Beach Millikan
HS/Long Beach City College) created some space
when she received a pass at the top of the box and
cut past one defender before sending off her pass.
The offense was
enough for freshman goalkeeper
Erika Trejo
(Artesia HS), who earned a shutout in her
first collegiate game and made six saves along the
way.
The second half
was more of the same, as the quick-striking Falcons
needed less than a minute to make it a 3-0 lead.
Freshman
Jessica
Ortiz (Narbonne HS) received
the ball at the top of the box and worked a
give-and-go with freshman
Daniela
Mendez (Internacional de Guatemala
HS) before faking out the goalie and
scoring. Three minutes later, Ortiz passed the ball
to Mendez outside the box where she chipped one past
the sprawling goalkeeper. The scoring was closed out
when freshman
Laura Ropp
(Lakewood HS) played a ball over all of the
Wolverine defenders to Ortiz, who scored right
before the end of the game.
In their second
game, Cerritos scored all four of their goals in the
first half. It started when Leon sent a chip pass
over the defenders to Gandarilla, who went in alone
against the goalkeeper and scored in the sixth
minute. Just two minutes later, freshman
Victoria Florez (Bishop Amat HS)
received the ball from Gandarilla on the left side
and sent a shot that deflected of the defender and
went in for a goal. Freshman
Tatiana
Cortes (La Mirada HS) stole
the ball at the midline and sent a pass through to
Gandarilla, who scored making it 3-0 in the 14th
minute. Ortiz closed out the scoring when she
dribbled past the defender on the left side and
crossed the ball to Gandarilla, where her header
made it 4-0 in the 42nd minute.
Trejo played the
first 65 minutes and turned away the lone save she
saw. She gave way to Ropp, who posted a pair of
saves in the final 25 minutes. Last year the Falcons
did not allow a goal against until the ninth game of
the season.
