As the
two-time defending state champions, the Cerritos
College women's soccer team is well aware of the
potential for upsets in the first round. The
Falcons, seeded #8 despite their 18-2-0 record
entering the playoffs, dispatched #9-seeded San
Diego Mesa, 4-0 in the first round of the
Southern California Regional Playoffs on
Saturday afternoon. Cerritos (19-2-0) will now
advance to the second round with a possible
meeting with Santiago Canyon College, the
top-seeded team, as well as the #1-ranked team
in the country. Back in 2007, Cerritos defeated
Santiago Canyon for the state championship. The
shutout win also set a new school record with
their 19th, breaking the old record of 18
shutouts set last season.
"It looks like we will play Santiago Canyon, which will be a
game good enough for a Final Four match," said
head coach
Ruben Gonzalez. "But I don't think
it matters where or when we play them, because
in order to win the championship you have to
beat very good teams. We're just getting one in
the second round."
After a quick goal on a penalty kick goal by freshman
Ruby
Leon ( Fontana HS) in the
third minute, Cerritos didn't score again until
the second half. On the penalty kick, freshman
Tatiana Cortes ( La Mirada HS)
was tripped in the box by Candace Newton, with
Leon executing.
"We did play a good first half, but came out with a little
more intensity in the second half and seemed to
wear them down a little," added Gonzalez. "After
our second goal, the game really opened up,
which suits our style really well and we
executed with the extra spacing."
In the 62nd minute, sophomore
Nancy Gandarilla ( Long Beach
Millikan HS) sent a long ball at the net
that was deflected away by an Olympian defender.
It ended up on the foot of Leon, who scored her
team-leading 18th goal into the far side of the
net. Just nine minutes later, Gandarilla was on
the receiving end of a Leon pass for her 15th
goal. On the play, Leon worked the ball deep
into San Diego Mesa territory from the outside
and just sent a ball toward the goal where Gandarilla
was alone for an easy goal.
Cerritos closed out the scoring in the 80th minute when Leon
(two goals, two assists) sent a ball from the
outside to freshman
Daniela Mendez
( Internacional de Guatemala), who
scored off the pass. For the Falcons, freshman
goalkeeper Erika Trejo (Artesia HS) made six
saves to earn at least a share of her 13th
shutout on the year.
"I was really happy with the way our defenders played," said
Gonzalez. "The play of
Justine Telles ( St. Paul HS),
Morgan Thompson ( Mayfair HS),
Maria Zamarippa ( Artesia HS)
and Janeth
Arroyo ( Mayfair HS) led to
Ruby having such a good game offensively. They
were very organized and played well together.
That's the kind of play we need in order to go
deeper into the post-season."
