Although the
two-time defending state champion and defending
national champion Cerritos College women's soccer
team had another solid season, they were seeded #8
for the Southern California Regional Playoffs
because of their weak conference. The result was a
second round road game at #1-seeded Santiago Canyon
College on Tuesday that finished in a 1-0 loss,
which ended the Falcons season. Just two seasons
ago, Cerritos (19-3-0) defeated Santiago Canyon in
the state championship game for their first of two
straight state titles.
"I was
really disappointed in our team's play today," said
head coach
Ruben
Gonzalez. "We knew this would be a
tight game and that whoever made the fewest mistakes
would win. They made one and we didn't capitalize,
while we made two and they scored the only goal they
needed to win the game."
After a scoreless
first half, the Hawks got on the scoreboard in the
63rd minute on a scramble in front of the net. After
an initial shot was taken, the ball bounced around a
few times before Kaylee Schneekluth knocked it in
the net past freshman goalkeeper
Erika Trejo
(Artesia HS). The Falcons did have a good
scoring chance in the 17th minute of the game, by
sophomore
Nancy Gandarilla (Long Beach
Millikan HS) roll across the goal line.
"We just couldn't
get anything going," added Gonzalez. "It's
disappointing to lose because this would have been a
great state championship game. Both teams played
well on defense and I thought Janeth
Arroyo (Mayfair HS),
Justine Telles (St. Paul HS)
and Viridiana
Ortega (Fremont HS) all did a
very good job. We couldn't clear out one of their
shots and they did what they needed to to score."
