Looking to light a
fire under a few players, Cerritos College women's
soccer head coach
Ruben
Gonzalez decided to sit a few starters
in their first game after a 3-1 South Coast
Conference loss to Mt. San Antonio. Although the
Falcons didn't score in the first half of their home
game against Pasadena City College in the first
half, they seemed to get the message in the second
half, scoring four times for a 4-0 victory. The win
improves the team's record to 8-1-0 overall and
1-1-0 in the SCC, while the Lancers fell to 3-5-0
overall and 0-2-0 in conference. Cerritos will now
host ECC Compton Center at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
"I told the
players that the way we played (against Mt. SAC)
can't happen again," said Gonzalez. "We sat a few of
our starters to give them a chance to watch the game
and hope that they didn't like the feeling of
sitting. They played better in the second half and
especially after we finally scored. It seemed to
relax them a little because Pasadena was holding
everyone back and seemed content with a scoreless
game or even a 1-0 or 2-0 loss. We tend to put a lot
of pressure on ourselves, so hopefully with the loss
out of the way, we can regain our focus."
It wasn't until
the 66th minute when the Falcons finally cracked the
scoring open, as the Lancers collapsed around the
box on defense and looked to double-team anyone who
got close to the net. But sophomore
Nancy Gandarilla (Long Beach
Millikan HS) finally got a shot past Yvonne
Hernandez with a low, hard line drive that got past
her outstretched hands.
With the one goal
in hand, Pasadena City was forced to soften their
defense and look to create more on offense. That was
exactly what the Falcons were waiting for, as they
turned up the heat and sent multiple shots at
Hernandez, who faced 26 in the game and made 14
saves.
Gandarilla, who
had a hand in all four goals, was credited with
three assists, including the final three. In the
70th minute, she took control of the ball in front
of the net before spinning and passing to freshman
Tiffany Schultz (Mater Dei HS),
who scored into the right side of the net. Just 12
minutes later, Gandarilla fed a pass to freshman
Jessica Ortiz (Narbonne HS),
who spun and sent a clean shot to an open part of
the net.
Closing out the
scoring was freshman
Daniela
Mendez (Internacional de Guatemala
HS), who was the recipient of a bouncing ball
that Gandarilla sent to the net that bounced over
Hernandez right to Mendez. The Falcons had numerous
chances to score, with freshman
Laura Ropp
(Lakewood HS) putting five shots on net
from the outside that Hernandez had trouble
controlling. For Cerritos, freshman goalkeeper
Erika Trejo (Artesia HS)
earned the shutout win by making just one save on
the lone Lancer shot.
