The Cerritos
College women's soccer team went on the road and
came back with a big 3-0 South Coast Conference win
over Long Beach City College on Friday afternoon.
The Falcons (10-1-1 overall, 3-1-1 SCC), ranked #6
in the country, held off an attacking Vikings (6-4-1
overall, 3-1-0 SCC) in the second half to post the
win. The team will now host Los Angeles Harbor
College at 4:00 p.m. next Tuesday.
From the very
beginning of the game, Cerritos put the pressure on
the Long Beach City defense and eventually scored
all of their goals in the first half. Just 13
minutes into the game, freshman
Ruby Leon
(Fontana HS) scored her team-leading ninth
goal on an assist from freshman Viridiana
Ortega (Fremont HS), which
sent Leon in on a breakaway.
Then, in the 19th
minute, freshman
Jessica
Ortiz (Narbonne HS) scored an
unassisted goal on a rebound after Viking goalkeeper
Ileana Aparicio made the initial save. Before the
end of the first half, sophomore
Nancy Gandarilla (Long Beach
Millikan HS) regained a share of the team's
goal-scoring lead when she scored her ninth goal on
a breakaway after receiving a pass from freshman
Tatiana Cortes (La Mirada HS).
The Falcons, who
outshot the Vikings, 20-5 on the day, saw freshman
Erika Trejo (Artesia HS) play
the first 45 minutes and not be required to make a
save. She gave way to freshman
Laura Ropp
(Lakewood HS), who made three saves in the
second half when LBCC put more offensive pressure on
Cerritos.
