It took nearly a
full first half of action for the Cerritos College
women's soccer team to find the back of the net. But
when they did, goals came in bunches. The Falcons
broke open a 1-0 South Coast Conference home
game against Los Angeles Harbor College by scoring
five second half goals in the span of 13 minutes for
a 6-0 victory. With the win, Cerritos improved to
11-1-0 overall and 4-1-0 in conference action, while
the Seahawks dropped to 5-3-3 and 2-2-0. The Falcons
will now travel to El Camino College for a 4:00 p.m.
conference game on Friday.
Although Cerritos
only scored once in the first half, they controlled
every aspect of the game against the Seahawks, who
played the game without three regulars who were
forced to sit out. Just before the end of the first
half, freshman
Justine Telles (St. Paul HS) lifted
a ball from just outside the box over the
outstretched hands of LA Harbor goalkeeper Domitila
Hernandez. The ball came to Telles after Hernandez
cleared the ball after the initial shot.
But in the second
half, Cerritos used their depth and overall team
speed to wear down the Seahawks. Freshman
Jessica
Ortiz (Narbonne HS), who
assisted on three goals, scored in the 53rd minute
on a high bouncing ball after freshman Viridiana
Ortega (Fremont HS) sent her
the ball. Just one minute later, Ortiz fed freshman
Miranda Madrid (St. Joseph's HS),
who scored her first of two goals on the day.
Freshman
Ruby Leon
(Fontana HS) lifted a ball from 30 yards
out that landed perfectly under the crossbar in the
58th minute for a 4-0 lead, while freshman Janeth
Arroyo (Mayfair HS) scored
into the left side of the net after carrying the
ball down on a pass from freshman
Victoria Florez (Bishop Amat HS).
Madrid closed out the scoring a minute after the
goal from Arroyo when sophomore
Nancy Gandarilla (Long Beach
Millikan HS) controlled the ball in the box and
passed to Madrid, who scored easily.
Freshman
Laura Ropp (Lakewood
HS) started in goal and was not required to
make a save, while she earned the shutout win.
