Ever since their
stunning 3-1 loss to Mt. San Antonio College three
weeks ago, the Cerritos College women's soccer team
has made a point to shore up their defense. It has
shown in all five of their games since then, as the
Falcons have shut out each opponent, with the latest
being a 2-0 South Coast Conference win at El Camino
Friday afternoon. Cerritos (12-1-0 overall, 5-1-0
SCC), ranked #6 in the country, will now travel to
East Los Angeles College for a 4:00 p.m. conference
match on Tuesday.
In the win over
the Warriors, the Falcons were unable to get on the
scoreboard until the final minutes of the match.
With just five minutes left in the match, sophomore
Nancy Gandarilla (Long Beach
Millikan HS) won the ball on the right sideline
and crossed the ball to sophomore
Vanessa Monreal (Lynwood HS).
She stopped her momentum after receiving the pass
and drilled a shot from 20 yards out for her second
goal of the season. It also marked the 17th assist
on the year for Gandarilla, which puts her one
helper from tying the single-season school record of
18 assists set by Corina Villegas
last season.
Just two minutes
later, Cerritos picked up an insurance goal from
freshman
Miranda
Madrid (St. Joseph HS), who
scored from 15 yards out on the right side of the
field. Freshman
Stephanie
Lopez (Pioneer HS) took
possession of the ball at midfield and turn toward
the Warrior goal, where she found Madrid racing down
the right side.
Freshman
Laura Ropp
(Lakewood HS) made her second straight
start in goal and made three saves to earn the win.
She has yet to allow a goal all season.
