Freshman
Ruby Leon
(Fontana HS) had a first half that most
people dream about. In the span of 38 minutes, the
Cerritos College women's soccer player scored five
goals in a game at Pasadena City College on Tuesday
afternoon, which wound up a 6-0 victory for the
Falcons. The five-goal first half sets a new school
record, while her five tallies in a game was
also one shy of tying the school record of six goals
set by Monique Cisneros last
season. The win improved the Falcons record to
15-1-0 overall and 8-1-1 over, while the Lancers
dropped to 6-8-1 overall and 3-5-1 in conference.
The shutout was the eighth in a row for Cerritos,
who has outscored opponents 36-0 since a loss to Mt.
San Antonio ended their 46-game unbeaten streak. The
team will now travel to Compton on Friday for a 4:00
p.m. conference game against ECC Compton Center.
Leon got the
scoring started in the third minute and didn't waste
any time adding her second in the fifth minute.
Cerritos, who had been struggling with slow starts
in their last several games, turned up the heat from
the start of the game and throttled a stunned Lancer
team. Sophomore
Nancy Gandarilla (Long Beach
Millikan HS) scored in the 22nd minute for a
3-0 lead, while Leon scored her best goal in the
28th minute.
After stealing the
ball from Lancer goalie Yvette Hernandez, Leon made
a 360-degree spin move prior to firing a shot high
into the net from 12 yards out. She picked up her
last two goals just a minute apart, her fourth of
the game in the 37th minute and fifth in the 38th
minute.
Freshmen
goalkeepers
Laura Ropp
(Lakewood HS) and
Erika Trejo
(Artesia HS) each played one half and made
one save to share in the shutout. The Falcons scored
their first six goals on just 11 shots, while
finishing the game with 22 shots on goal.
