If the Cerritos
College women's soccer team is trying to make a
point that their defense is just as good, if not
better, than last year's National Championship team,
they took another step on Friday when they shut out ECC
Compton Center for their ninth consecutive shutout
in a 6-0 win. It was also the 15th of the season,
which is three shy of tying the record of 18 the
Falcons set last season. The team has also allowed
just four goals all year, with the record-low of 10
goals allowed also set last year. Cerritos (16-1-0
overall, 9-1-0 South Coast Conference) will now host
Long Beach City at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday in another
conference match.
In the win over ECC
Compton Center, freshman
Tatiana
Cortes (La Mirada HS) scored
three goals to double her season total, while
sophomore
Crystal
Garcia (John Glenn HS) scored
her first two of the season. Freshman
Jessica
Ortiz (Narbonne HS) added a
goal, her 10th of the campaign.
The Falcons scored
twice in the first half, with Cortes getting credit
for the first after sophomore
Nancy Gandarilla (Long Beach
Millikan HS) fed her the ball for her
single-season school record 19th assist.
She eclipsed the old record of 18, set by Corina
Villegas last year. Ortiz scored in the
31st minute when her corner kick deflected off the
keeper's hands and landed in the net.
Cerritos
controlled the entire game, which meant that
freshmen goalkeepers
Laura Ropp
(Lakewood HS) and
Erika Trejo
(Artesia HS) weren't asked to make a save
the entire game. The two shared their fifth shutout
of the year, while it was Trejo's 12th of the year.
The single-season record of 16 was set by
Chantal Cervero last year.
Offensively, the
Falcons took 24 shots and scored their four
second-half goals in the span of 15 minutes. It was
a result of solid passing to players who were in
position to score. Cortes scored both of her
second-half goals on passes that were centered to
her in front of the net, as did Garcia.
