Ranked #1 in the
nation, the Cerritos College women's soccer improved to
3-0-0 on the year and ran their unbeaten streak to 42
games when they defeated host Taft College, 5-0 in a
non-conference game on Friday. The Falcons will get six
days off before they travel to Oxnard College for a
non-conference game.
After a scoreless first 40 minutes, Cerritos got on the board
when sophomore
Nancy
Gandarilla (Long Beach Millikan HS)
won a ball that was cleared away from the Cougars net.
She fed the ball to freshman
Ruby Leon
(Fontana HS) at the top of the box, where she
turned and scored. A little over a minute later,
freshman
Jessica Ortiz
(Narbonne HS) sent a ball to freshman
Tiffany
Schultz (Mater Dei HS) and she
toe-poked the ball over the goalkeeper's head.
Freshman goalkeeper
Erika Trejo
(Artesia HS) was the recipient of the offensive
barrage and earned her third shutout of the season,
making five saves on the day.
Early in the second half, Gandarilla scored her fourth goal
of the season on a through ball from freshman
Daniela Mendez
(Internacional de Guatemala HS). As the game
was coming to a close, Leon won a ball at midfield and
passed to Gandarilla, who cut across the box. The play
finished when Gandarilla recorded her second assist
after passing the ball to Ortiz in the 82nd minute.
Cerritos closed out the scoring with Gandarilla earning
her third assist and fourth point of the game in the
85th minute. Executing a perfect give-and-go, freshman
Victoria Florez (Bishop Amat HS)
received a pass while rushing down the left sideline and
fed it to Gandarilla, who gave it right back. Florez
then scored when her shot deflected off the keeper's
hands and into the net. |
