It's been almost
two years (October 16, 2007) since the Cerritos
College women's soccer team has lost a game. After
disposing of both Oxnard College (6-0) and Cosumnes
River College (3-0) over the weekend, the Falcons
have gone 39-0-5 in their last 44 games. In that
time, the team has won a pair of state
championships, while they were crowned the national
champions after last season. Cerritos (5-0-0) is
ranked #1 in the state and nation and have outscored
opponents 23-0 through their first five games. The
team will now play their home opener on Friday at
4:00 p.m. when they host Palomar College.
In the win over
Oxnard, the Falcons had five different players score
goals, led by freshman midfielder
Ruby Leon
(Fontana HS), who scored twice and added an
assist. The team opened up a 4-0 lead and scored all
of them within a nine-minute time span.
Sophomore forward
Nancy Gandarilla (Long Beach
Millikan HS/Long Beach City College) got the
scoring started in the 18th minute when she headed
in a corner kick from freshman Viridiana
Ortega (Fremont HS). Gandarilla
had a hand in the team's second goal two minutes
later after she took the ball down the right
sideline and dribbled around three defenders before
passing to Leon, who chipped it in for a goal.
Freshman
Victoria Florez (Bishop Amat
HS) kept the pressure on the Condors when three
minutes later she pushed the ball up the left side
and fed a crossing pass to sophomore midfielder
Vanessa Monreal (Lynwood HS),
who scored her first goal of the year.
Freshman
goalkeeper
Erika Trejo
(Artesia HS) earned the shutout win and was
asked to make just four saves on the day. She
received more offensive support from freshmen Janeth
Arroyo (Mayfair HS) and
Stephanie Lopez (Pioneer HS),
who each scored second half goals.
It was more of the
same in the game against Cosumnes River, as both Gandarilla
(45th minute) and Leon (88th minute) scored, while
Trejo continued the team's shutout streak by making
eight saves. Leon's goal came as a result of a
penalty kick after a handball was called in the box.
Freshman
Miranda
Madrid (St. Joseph's HS) was
credited with assists in both of the team's goals,
as she took a rebound off a goal kick and fed it to Gandarilla
for the first goals and then won a ball in the air
and fed freshman
Tiffany
Schultz (Mater Dei HS) for a
goal in the 49th minute.
