Through the first
45 minutes of their non-conference home opener
against Palomar College, the Cerritos College
women's soccer team looked as though they hadn't
played in six days. But after a thought-provoking
halftime speech from head coach
Ruben
Gonzalez, the Falcons put four in the
net for a 4-0 victory. The win extended the
program's unbeaten streak to 45 games (40-0-5),
while they are now 6-0-0 and have outscored
opponents 27-0 on the year. The team will host Taft
College next Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. in another
non-conference affair.
"I told the team
that their performance in the first half was very
sloppy and they looked like they didn't want to be
out there," said Gonzalez, who's team is ranked #1
in the nation and the state. "They didn't run well,
didn't pass well and I told them our energy level
had to be raised."
Cerritos did have
several good scoring opportunities, but to no avail.
In the 22nd minute, sophomore
Nancy Gandarilla (Long Beach
Millikan HS) sent a shot just over the net,
while freshman
Miranda
Madrid (St. Joseph's HS) had a
header go just over the crossbar. Then, in the 33rd
minute, freshman
Daniela
Mendez (Internacional de Guatemala
HS) was stopped from point-blank range by
Comets goalkeeper Chelsea Vallier.
The talk really
appeared to work, as they came out and scored 30
seconds into the second half, as freshman
Ruby Leon
(Fontana HS) dribbled the ball to the top
of the box and fed a pass to Madrid, who was at the
corner of the net and she scored into an open net.
That seemed to take a lot of pressure off the team
and they responded by chasing down loose balls and
passing smarter.
In the 68th
minute, Mendez saw that Comets (1-5-0) Vallier had
come far out of the net and sent a nice pass to
Leon, who lifted the ball over the keeper, where it
slowly rolled into the net.
Just eight minutes
later, Leon, who had two goals and two assists,
picked up her second tally of the game and seventh
of the year, as she dribbled around Comets defender
Joanna Gonzalez and drilled a low shot into the net.
Gandarilla, who stole the ball at midfield, was
credited with the assist. The scoring was concluded
when Leon passed to freshman
Elizabeth
Vazquez (Fontana HS), who
scored into the far corner of the net.
Freshman
goalkeeper
Erika Trejo
(Artesia HS) was untested all afternoon and
made just one save on the lone Palomar shot. By
contrast, the Falcons had 17 shots on goal, with Vallier
making eight saves.
