It took
six-plus games and 546 minutes, but it finally
happened. The Cerritos College women's soccer
team allowed an opponent to score a goal. The
Falcons, ranked #1 in the nation and state,
defeated Taft College, 3-1 in a non-conference
game at Cerritos to improve their record to
7-0-0 on the season. The shutout streak marked
the second year in a row the team opened the
season by shutting out multiple teams. Last
year, the Falcons didn't allow a goal until
their ninth game of the year. Cerritos will now
open South Coast Conference action next Tuesday
in a 6:00 p.m. game at Mt. San Antonio College.
In the win
over the Cougars, the Falcons only needed a
minute to get on the board, as freshman
midfielder
Tatiana Cortes (La Mirada HS)
chipped a ball into the net after receiving a
pass from sophomore forward
Nancy Gandarilla (Long Beach
Millikan HS). Cerritos picked up their
other two goals three minutes apart before the
first half ended. In the 38th minute, freshman
midfielder
Ruby
Leon (Fontana HS) was
tackled just inside the box and was awarded a
penalty kick. She calmly scored her eighth goal
of the year. Gandarilla closed out the team's
scoring in the 41st minute when freshman forward
Daniela Mendez (Internacional
de Guatemala HS) fed her a pass as she was
streaking toward the box and Gandarilla put her
seventh goal into the net.
Although they
didn't score in the second half, Cerritos
continued to put pressure on the Cougar defense
and peppered the nets with 11 shots, while
Falcon goalkeeper
Erika
Trejo (Artesia HS) turned
award four shots before allowing the first goal
of the season in the 51st minute on a rebound
off a save.
