On Tuesday
afternoon, the Cerritos College women's soccer team
saw their 46-game unbeaten streak (41-0-5) come to
an end with a 3-1 South Coast Conference loss to Mt.
San Antonio College. The Falcons (7-1-0, 0-1-0) had
not tasted defeat since a 2-1 loss against Long
Beach City College on October 16, 2007. The two-time
defending state champions and defending national
champions will look to start another streak on
Friday at 4:00 p.m. when they host Pasadena City
College.
The Mounties took
a 1-0 lead in the 54th minute on a Brianna Joseph
goal, but the Falcons stormed right back to tie the
game in the 60th minute. After sophomore
Vanessa Monreal (Lynwood HS)
took control of the ball at midfield, she headed the
ball to freshman
Jessica
Ortiz (Narbonne HS), who
chipped the ball into the net.
However, Mt. San
Antonio came back in the next minute to regain the
lead on a goal by Christina Carriaga. That put
Cerritos in a position where they needed to send
more players into the attacking zone. They did get
off several shots, but left the defense exposed,
which allowed Carriaga to score an insurance goal in
the 90th minute. Freshman goalkeeper
Erika Trejo
(Artesia HS) suffered her first loss of the
year and made five saves on the day.
