2007-08 BACK-TO-BACK STATE CHAMPIONS
2008 NATIONAL CHAMPIONS

03.15.11 - Women's soccer coach wins CIF
Championship
In his six seasons as
the Cerritos College women's soccer
coach,
Ruben Gonzalez has experienced
what it's like to win a South Coast
Conference championship, state
championship and national championship.
But one championship had eluded Gonzalez
in his four years as the girl's soccer
coach at Bishop Amat High School. He had
yet to know the experience of winning a
CIF Division III Championship. But this
season, Gonzalez and his team helped him
reach that level when they upset Ayala
High, 1-0 to win the championship...[more]
02.18.11 - Pair of Falcons set to move
on
After
advancing to the state tournament for
the third time in the last four years,
the Cerritos College women's soccer team
has announced that two of their players
have received scholarships to play at
the four year level. The Falcons, who
captured the South Coast Conference
championship this season, qualified for
the state semi-finals, but were defeated
by Santa Rosa Junior College, 2-1.
Sophomore defender Janeth Arroyo (Mayfair HS), who was a 2nd Team NSCAA/Performance Subaru Division III All-America selection, has signed with Cal State Northridge. As for sophomore midfielder
Tatiana Cortes (La Mirada HS), who was a two-time 1st Team All-SCC selection along with Arroyo, has signed with Cal State Long Beach...[more]
01.11.11 - Soccer team delivers smiles
to orphanage
It's become a yearly
tradition for Cerritos College women's
soccer coach
Ruben Gonzalez to bring several
members of his team to the Casa Hogar
Santa Teresita de Jesus Orphanage for
Girls in Tijuana. Gonzalez, his wife
Senaida, several Cerritos College and
Bishop Amat High School players arrived
on January 7 for Día de los Reyes (Three
Kings Day), which represents the arrival
in Bethlehem of Wise Men bearing gifts
for the baby Jesus. In addition to gifts
and monetary donations, they provided
the group of 60 girls with some Cerritos
College women's soccer sweatshirts,
soccer balls and spent the day with the
girls.
"We arrived at the orphanage with the
preparations underway for the young
girls," said Gonzalez. "This year we
learned the orphanage had grown from 50
to 60 children, including a 1-year old
boy. There were many new faces when we
arrived and the children were all
excited to see us because they new
something special was being planned for
them. They heard the jukebox music and
smelled the meat on the grill that was
being prepared for them to have
lunch."..[more]
12.15.10 - Falcons ranked #6 nationally
to end season
Looking to win their
third state championship in the last
four years, the Cerritos College women's
soccer team came up short, as they lost
in the state semi-final game to eventual
state runner-up Santa Rosa College. The
Falcons, who finished the season 21-2-2
overall, were ranked #6 in the country
by the National Soccer Coaches
Association of America (NSCAA). Last
year the team finished ranked #14 in the
country...[more]
12.14.10 - It's the season of giving for
Cerritos soccer
About
this time every year, a group of 58
girls from ages 2-15 start to get
excited at the arrival of the members of
the Cerritos College women's soccer
team. For the fourth year in a row,
Falcon head coach
Ruben Gonzalez and his
wife, Senaida will travel to the Casa Hogar
Santa Teresita de Jesus Orphanage for
Girls in Tijuana to bring the orphans
toys and gifts...[more]
12.03.10 - Loss in semi-final game ends
season
It wasn't for lack of
opportunities that kept the Cerritos
College women's soccer team from
advancing to the California Community
College Athletic Association state
championship game. The Falcons, who
faced Santa Rosa Junior College on
Friday at College of the Canyons in the
state semi-final game, dropped a 1-0
decision, which ends their season at
22-2-2. Cerritos was looking for a
chance to win their third state title in
the last four years, with their most
recent in 2008 coming against Santa Rosa
at College of the Canyons. In both of
the team's losses this season, Cerritos
was shutout, with the other coming in a
2-0 loss to Cosumnes River College back
in September. The loss also snapped a
19-game (17-0-2) unbeaten streak.
"I don't think we played one of our
better games of the season," said Falcon
head coach
Ruben Gonzalez. "I thought we were the better team, minus the goal.
There were times when we should have shot, and we tried to pass it - we were
close enough to take the shots. We had plenty of chances, but their keeper was always in the right place."...[more]
11.29.10 - Team has eight earn All-SCC
honors
As they prepare to
compete in the state semi-final game,
the Cerritos College women's soccer team
has learned that eight of their players
have earned All-South Coast Conference
honors. The Falcons (22-1-2), who will
face Santa Rosa Junior College on Friday
at 4:00 p.m. at College of the Canyons,
also won their fifth straight SCC title.
Heading the list of 1st Team selections
are sophomores
Justine Telles (St. Paul HS), Liliana
Leos (Southeast HS) and Janeth
Arroyo (Mayfair HS), who
are two-time selections, along
with freshman Nayely
Alcala (Buena Park HS).
Additionally, head coach
Ruben Gonzalez was named the
conference's Co-Coach of the Year, along
with former assistant coach Tessa
Troglia, who is now the head coach at
East Los Angeles College...[more]
11.29.10 - State Tournament next up for
Falcons
After missing out on
defending their two-year run on the
state championship last season, the
Cerritos College women's soccer team is
back at the state tournament, where the
Falcons will play their semi-final game
at 4:00 p.m. on Friday at College of the
Canyons. Seeded #4 in the Southern
California Regional Playoffs, Cerritos
(22-1-2) opened with a convincing 6-0
win over South Coast Conference opponent
East Los Angeles College. They followed
that with a 1-0 overtime win over
defending state and national champion
Santiago Canyon College, before securing
their spot at the state tournament with
a 2-1 win over top-ranked Los Angeles
Pierce College on Saturday...[more]
11.27.10 - Cerritos defeats top-seeded
LA Pierce, 2-1
For
the third time in four years, the
Cerritos College women's soccer team has
advanced to the California Community
College Athletic Association state
tournament. On Saturday afternoon, the
Falcons (21-1-2) defeated top-seeded Los
Angeles Pierce College, 2-1 and will now
face Santa Rosa Junior College in one of
the two state semi-final games on Friday
at College of the Canyons...[more]
11.23.10 - Falcons advance to 3rd Round
after win
Last
year, the Cerritos College women's
soccer team was the defending state and
national champion, but had to play on
the road in the second round of the
Southern California Regional Playoffs.
They lost that game, 1-0 to Santiago
Canyon College, who went on to win the
state and national championship. This
season, the Hawks were forced to play
the Falcons on their home field in the
second round on Tuesday afternoon.
Cerritos, seeded #4 for the playoffs,
scored an overtime goal to pull out a
1-0 win and advance to the third round,
which will be played on Saturday. It
appears as though Cerritos (20-1-2) will
travel to face top-seeded Los Angeles
Pierce College (21-0-2) at a time to be
determined.
In
a game that was defensive-minded, the
Falcons finally got on the scoreboard in
the 97th minute when sophomore
Justine Telles (St. Paul HS)
sent a corner kick toward Hawks goalkeeper Angie
Orozco. But Orozco mishandled the ball and it
went through her hands and into the net for the
game's lone goal...[more]
11.20.10 - Cerritos sends message in
playoff win
For a team that won
their fifth South Coast Conference
championship in a row, and set a new
school record for allowing just three
goals during the 14-game conference
season and scored 48 goals, it would
seem logical that the conference's
Offensive and Defensive Players of the
Year would bear Cerritos College women's
soccer team names. But the Falcons were
shut out in the conference post-season
awards, so when they found out that
their first round opponent in the
Southern California Regional Playoffs
would be a team from the SCC, they
entered the game with a chip on their
shoulder...[more]
11.16.10 - Men's and women's soccer open
playoffs at home
Both the Cerritos
College men's and women's soccer teams
will open the Southern California
Regional Playoffs on familiar territory,
as the seeding was announced on Tuesday.
The Falcon men's team, who finished in
second place in the South Coast
Conference, were seeded #3 and will host
#14-seeded Chaffey College at 11:00 a.m.
on Saturday. Later that day, at 2:00
p.m., the #4-seeded Cerritos women's
team will host South Coast Conference
opponent East Los Angeles College, who
was seeded #13. This year marked the
fifth in a row that the Falcon women's
team captured the conference
championship...[more]
11.12.10 - Falcons finish regular
season with another shutout
The Cerritos College
women's soccer team concluded their
South Coast Conference season on Friday
with a 2-0 shutout win at East Los
Angeles College. The Falcons, who won
their fifth straight SCC title, will now
wait until Tuesday to find out where
they will be seeded for the Southern
California Regional Playoffs, which
start on Saturday. Heading into the
playoffs, Cerritos (18-1-2 overall,
12-0-2 SCC) is riding a 16-game unbeaten
streak (14-0-2), which includes several
school records that have fallen.
In the win over the Huskies, freshman
goalkeeper
Sandra Coto (Paramount HS)
added to her new
single-season conference record with her
12th shutout, while the team set a new
standard with only three conference
goals allowed. The old mark of four
goals allowed was set during the 2006
season...[more]
11.09.10 - Record falls in shutout
victory
Although the Cerritos
College women's soccer team clinched
their fifth straight South Coast
Conference championship, they have
already seen one individual record set,
while they are closing in on a team
record. In the Falcons 3-0 win at Los
Angeles Harbor College on Tuesday
afternoon, the team improved their
season record to 17-1-2, while they are
11-0-2 with one regular season game
remaining. They will travel to East Los
Angeles College for a 1:00 p.m. game.
In posting the shutout win, freshman
Sandra Coto (Paramount HS) set a new single-season record with her 11th conference shutout, breaking the old record of 10 set last season by
Laura Ropp (Lakewood HS), who is serving as a red-shirt this year. Coto also made five saves in the win. Additionally, the team has allowed just three goals in conference play, which is one less than the record four they allowed during the 2006 season...[more]
11.05.10 - Cerritos controls game and
posts 3-1 win
For
the Cerritos College women's soccer
team, the dominance they showed against
Mt. San Antonio College in the first
half of their South Coast Conference
game on Friday didn't show in their 2-1
advantage. The Falcons did score another
goal in the second half for a 3-1 win,
but the only shot the Mounties got off
was a soft goal that went through the
hands of freshman goalkeeper
Sandra Coto (Paramount
HS). It didn't affect the team's
overall performance, as they outshot
their opponent 15-1 in the win. Cerritos
improved their overall record to
16-1-2 and 10-0-2 in the SCC with just
two games remaining. The team will play
their final two regular season games on
the road, as they face Los Angeles
Harbor College on Tuesday and East Los
Angeles College on Friday.
The Falcons opened the scoring in the seventh minute, as
sophomore Liliana
Leos (Southeast HS) scored
off a free kick from just outside the box. The
play developed after sophomore
Tiffany Schultz (Mater Dei HS)
was tackled while making a move toward the goal.
In the 22nd minute, Schultz was attacking toward
the Mountie net, where goalkeeper Diana Zambrano
was attempting to get to the ball before
Schultz. But she was too late, as Schultz
chipped the ball to freshman
Alexis Clavesilla (Warren HS),
who scored into an open net...[more]
11.02.10 - Falcons post 6-0 win over LB
City
After
taking a sizable 3-0 into halftime in
their South Coast Conference women's
soccer game against Long Beach City
College on Tuesday, Cerritos College
made it a point to come out in the
second half with more intensity. The
Falcons scored twice in the first two
minutes, and went on to defeat the
Vikings, 6-0. The win improved the
team's record to 15-1-2 overall and
9-0-2 in conference action, as the
Falcons host Mt. San Antonio College on
Friday at 1:00 p.m. in their final home
conference match.
"We were happy to be back on our field today, because a
larger field suits our style of play much
better," said head coach Ruben Gonzalez,
referring to his team's scoreless tie at
Pasadena City College last Friday. "Even though
we were leading 3-0 at the half, I knew we could
play better, so I told the team that we needed
to come out to start the second half and put the
game away."...[more]
10.29.10 - Missed chances end in
scoreless tie
When a
team has as much speed as the Cerritos
College women's soccer team has, the
larger the field, the better it suits
their style of play. On Friday, the
Falcons had their chances to score in
the first half, but came up empty on
three one-on-one chances and were
clamped down in the second and had to
settle for a scoreless tie against host
Pasadena City College. Cerritos (14-1-2
overall; 8-0-2) still has a comfortable
lead in the South Coast Conference
standings and will look to get back to
their winning ways next Tuesday at 1:00
p.m. when they host Long Beach City
College...[more]
10.26.10 - Cerritos scores in bunches to
win 6-0
Coming
off a 2-2 tie with El Camino College on
Friday, the Cerritos College women's
soccer team was looking to take back
control of the game in their next match.
The Falcons did just that at home on
Tuesday, as they scored three times in
the span of six minutes, en route to a
6-0 South Coast Conference win over ECC
Compton Center. The win improved the
team's record to 14-1-1 overall, while
they are now 8-0-1 in SCC play. They
will now travel to Pasadena City College
on Friday at 1:00 p.m. in another
conference match.
After a slow start to the game, the Falcons got on the board
in the 27th minute when freshman
Daniela Martin (La Puente HS)
scored off a corner kick from sophomore Liliana
Leos (Southeast HS). It
was Leos who gave the team a 2-0 lead in the
35th minute when she scored off a beautiful free
kick from 30 yards out...[more]
10.22.20 - Falcons escape El Camino with
tie
Faced with a position
they are rarely in, the Cerritos College
women's soccer team scored two goals
late in the second half to salvage a 2-2
South Coast Conference tie with host El
Camino College on Friday afternoon. The
Falcons, who are unbeaten in their last
10 games (9-0-1), needed two goals in
the last 19 minutes to come away with
the draw, as they improved to 7-0-1 in
the SCC and 13-1-1 overall. They will
return home on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. to
host ECC Compton Center...[more]
10.19.10 - Cerritos continues to
dominate conference
Freshman forward
Daniela Martin (La
Puente HS) scored four goals, while
freshman forward
Jackie Cisneros (Bellflower
HS) added two more to lead the
Cerritos College women's soccer team to
a dominant 7-0 South Coast Conference
home win over second place East Los
Angeles College on Tuesday afternoon.
The Falcons, who lead the conference by
10 points, are now 7-0-0 in the SCC and
13-1-0 over the end of the first round.
Cerritos will now travel to El Camino
College on Friday for a 2:00 p.m.
contest.
"This is the Daniela we expected to see after she got herself
into playing shape," said head coach
Ruben Gonzalez. "We didn't play
Lily (Leos) today
so she could get some extra rest, but we were
prepared to bring her in if we needed her. East
LA is a good team with some very good players.
But we jumped on them early, so I felt safe
keeping Lily on the bench. Especially with the
way Daniela was playing."...[more]
10.15.10 - Big win over LA Harbor
keeps team undefeated in SCC
The Cerritos College
women's soccer team continued to hold
onto first place in the South Coast
Conference after they recorded a 5-0 win
over Los Angeles Harbor at home on
Friday afternoon. The win was the eighth
win in a row for the Falcons, who
improved to 12-1-0 overall and 5-0-0 in
the SCC. The victory was also the team's
sixth straight shutout, while the team
will host East Los Angeles College at
2:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The game will also
mark the end of the first round of
conference play.
Cerritos scored early in the first half and then again right
before halftime to take a 2-0 lead into intermission. In
the fifth minute, sophomore midfielder
Tatiana Cortes
(La Mirada HS) started the play, as she fed a
crossing pass to sophomore forward
Liliana Leos
(Southeast HS) along the left side of the field.
Leos then crossed the ball back to sophomore midfielder
Miranda
Madrid (St. Joseph's HS), who scored...[more]
10.12.10 - Falcons shut out Mounties,
2-0
Last year, the Mt. San
Antonio College women's soccer team made
a strong bid to unseat Cerritos College
for the South Coast Conference
championship, and they finished just two
points back at the end of the season.
This year, in their first meeting, the
Falcons recorded a solid 2-0 win over
the Mounties to maintain their lead in
the conference. Cerritos, winners of
seven games in a row, are now 11-1-0
overall and 4-0-0 in SCC play. They will
host Los Angeles Harbor College at 2:00
p.m. on Friday in their next game...[more]
10.08.10 - Cerritos wins sixth game
in a row
Playing yet another team
that would be content with dropping
their players back in hopes of a
scoreless tie, the Cerritos College
women's soccer team showed that they
have the offensive power to break
through any collapsing defense. On
Friday, the Falcons won their sixth game
in a row to improve to 10-1-0 overall
and 4-0-0 with a 4-0 South Coast
Conference win at Long Beach City
College. Cerritos will now travel to Mt.
San Antonio on Tuesday for a 2:00 p.m.
conference match...[more]
10.05.10 - Falcons post shutout over
Pasadena City
The
Cerritos College women's soccer team
improved to 9-1-0 overall and 3-0-0 in
South Coast Conference play with a 3-0
win over visiting Pasadena City College
on a rainy Tuesday afternoon. The win
was the team's fifth in a row and they
will now travel to Long Beach City
College on Friday for a 2:00 p.m.
conference game.
"We came out a little more aggressively than we have in the
past few games," said head coach
Ruben
Gonzalez. "I'm happy with the way
our offense played against Pasadena (5-2-2, 1-1-1)
because they are strong in the back. We were also
solid on defense. It was a good team effort."...[more]
10.01.10 - Early goals lead to 4-0
conference win
Knowing that they need
to improve on their scoring chances, the
Cerritos College women's soccer team put
three in the back of the net in the
first half, as they posted a 4-0 South
Coast Conference win at ECC Compton
Center on Friday afternoon. The Falcons,
who are now 8-1-0 overall and 2-0-0
in SCC play, will host Pasadena City at
2:00 p.m. on Tuesday in another
conference game...[more]
09.30.10 - Cerritos women's soccer
out to fight cancer
For
the month of October, the Cerritos
College women's soccer team will be
wearing pink pre-game warm-up jerseys to
help bring awareness to fighting cancer.
Falcon head coach
Ruben Gonzalez lost his mother,
Silvia Gonzalez, to the fight against
pancreatic cancer on March 16, 2006 and
he and his team are looking to raise
funds in her name.
"As a team, our goal is to raise $500, but I really hope we
can surpass that number," said Gonzalez, whose
team is currently 7-1-0 overall and ranked fifth
in the nation by the National Soccer Coaches
Association of America (NSCAA). "We're going to
be wearing these pink warm-ups as a reminder to
all that they fight against cancer is ongoing
and we want to do our part."...[more]
09.28.10 - Falcons open conference
with win
The
Cerritos College women's soccer team

Tuesday afternoon by defeating visiting
El Camino College, 1-0. The win by the
Falcons (7-1-0, 1-0-0), who are ranked
fifth in the country by the National
Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA),
scored in the 18th minute and used a
shut-down defense to keep the Warriors
(5-3-0, 0-1-0) at bay all afternoon.
Cerritos will now travel on Friday for a
2:00 p.m. SCC game against ECC Compton
Center.
The game's lone goal came on a perfectly placed shot by
sophomore
Morgan
Thompson (Mayfair HS), who
lifted the ball from just outside the box over the
outstretched hands of El Camino goalkeeper Alicia
Sala...[more]
09.21.10 - Late goal salvages win over
Palomar
After
falling behind twice in their
non-conference home opener on Tuesday
afternoon, the Cerritos College women's
soccer team scored a pair of second half
goals, with the winning goal coming in
the 80th minute, and came away with a
3-2 win. The Falcons (6-1-0), who start
South Coast Conference play next
Tuesday, took advantage of a
three-player collision that left
sophomore Liliana
Leos (Southeast HS)
in front of an empty net, where she
scored her second goal of the game.
"We're lucky Lily showed up to play today, because not many
others did," said head coach
Ruben
Gonzalez. "We had a little disciplinary
problem the other day, so I sat most of my sophomore
starters. Only Lily and Tat (Tatiana
Cortes) were in the starting lineup,
although I did see some nice things from some of our
freshmen."...[more]
09.19.10 - Cerritos suffers first loss

After spending the first
three weeks of the season on the road,
the Cerritos College women's soccer team
finally dropped their first game of the
year, as they were defeated by Cosumnes
River College, 2-0 on Saturday night.
The Falcons rebounded the following

4:00 p.m. when they face Palomar
College...[more]
09.11.10 - Falcons post two big wins on

Normally when a team
travels across the country to play a
game, there's always the sense of not
feeling in your comfort zone. But if the
way the Cerritos College women's soccer
team played in their two games in New
Jersey over the weekend, they may want
to set up camp out there. The Falcons
(4-0-0) headed to the East Coast to take
on a pair of community colleges in New
Jersey and came away with a 6-0 win over
Mercer (NJ) Community College, followed
by a 4-1 victory over Brookdale (NJ)
Community College...[more]

gifts left by the Reyes Magos (Magi). So right now,
we're in the process of collecting monetary
donations, as well as toys and clothes for us to
bring to the orphanage."...[more] |
