11.21.11 - FALCONS SWEEP CONFERENCE AWARDS

    On the heels of winning their sixth straight South Coast Conference championship, the Cerritos College women's soccer team swept through the conference awards, as 10 players were honored, along with Ruben Gonzalez, who was named the Coach of the Year for the second time. The Falcons, who were upset in the first round of the Southern California Regional Playoffs, concluded their season with a 20-2-0 record. Freshman Lauren Nanez (La Mirada HS), who led the Falcons in scoring, was named the conference's Offensive Player of the Year, while freshman Victoria Carter (La Mirada HS) was chosen the Defensive Player of the Year.
 
    Joining Nanez and Carter were freshman goalkeeper Alexis Carrillo (Bishop Amat HS), sophomore defender Susana Mendoza (Paloma Valley HS), freshman midfielder Cheslea Villegas (Bishop Amat HS) and freshman defender Karina Sandoval (Universidad de Guadalajara). Named to the 2nd Team were sophomore midfielder Monica Ramirez (Segerstrom HS/Irvine Valley College), freshman forward Mabel Chacon (Cabrillo HS), freshman forward Gaby Zamarripa (Artesia HS) and freshman midfielder Jennifer Mejicanos (Bellflower HS).
 
    Nanez led the team in goals (21), assists (16) and points (58) on the year, was one helper shy of tying the school's freshman assist record. Her 21 goals are tied for the fourth most in a season. Carter was a very aggressive defender, who not only helped the team record 14 shutouts on the year, she finished sixth on the team ins coring with 21 points, with her six goals and nine assists. Carrillo, who totaled 12 shutouts on the season, had an 0.28 goals against average, while Mendoza, a midfielder most of the season, became a defender late in the season to capitalize on her overall skills. She posted three goals and four assists on the season, while Sandoval was known for her corner kicks and free kicks, as well as her defensive skills. Sandoval scored four goals and added eight assists from the back row, with Villegas contributing three goals and five assists.
 
    Chacon finished second on the team in scoring with nine goals and eight assists, while Ramirez totaled six goals and three assists for the Falcons. Zamarripa was second on the team in assists (10) and also scored five goals, with Mejicanos recording a pair of goals and an assist.
