10.28.11 - LATE GOAL ENOUGH FOR CERRITOS AGAINST EL CAMINO

It took longer than anticipated, but the Cerritos College women's soccer team needed 71 minutes before they finally scored a goal against El Camino College in a South Coast Conference home affair on Friday. The Falcons (16-0-0, 10-0-0), who are the top-ranked team in the country by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) for Division 111 (non-scholarship) schools, put constant pressure on the Warrior (11-5-1, 6-4-0) defense the entire game, but couldn't score until late in the game. Cerritos will host Long Beach City College at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday before playing their final three conference games on the road.

After peppering El Camino goalkeeper Bronwyn O'Neill with constant shots, it was a bad-hop over Warrior defender Yennifer Baca, that helped clear freshman Lauren Nanez (La Mirada HS) for her team-leading 18th goal of the season. On the play, freshman Chelsea Villegas (Bishop Amat HS) looked to thread a pass through the El Camino defense, and when her pass took a bad hop over Baca's leg, it cleared Nanez for a point-blank shot that she converted.

Throughout the game, Nanez, Villegas, freshmen Mabel Chacon (Cabrillo HS) and Samantha Smith (Long Beach Millikan HS), along with sophomore Monica Ramirez (Segerstrom HS/Irvine Valley College) helped the Falcons accumulate 17 shots on goal.

Defensively, the quartet of sophomores Susana Mendoza (Paloma Valley HS) and Jackie Cisneros (Bellflower HS), as well as freshman Karina Sandoval (Universidad de Guadalajara) and Victoria Carter (La Mirada HS) shut down any attacks, which enabled freshman goalkeeper Alexis Carrillo (Bishop Amat HS) to earn her 10th shutout of the year.
