The Cerritos College women's soccer team needed
34 minutes to score their first goal, but once
they found the back of the net, they did it in
bunches. The Falcons, who are ranked #1 in the
country by the National Soccer Coaches
Association of America (NSCAA), scored four
times in 14 minutes, as they posted a 5-1 South
Coast Conference win at home against Pasadena
City on Friday. Cerritos will now travel to El
Camino College on Tuesday for a 4:00 p.m.
conference match.
The first to score for the Falcons was freshman Julissa
Castaneda (San Pedro HS),
who tipped in a pass from freshman
Victoria Carter (La Mirada HS)
that cleared the outstretched hands of Lancer
goalkeeper Jessica Capra. Cerritos then regained
possession of the ball right away after the
first goal, where freshman
Karina Sandoval (Universidad de
Guadalajara) fed sophomore
Monica
Ramirez (Segerstrom HS/Irvine
Valley College) for another goal in the
35th minute.
Right before halftime, Cerritos took a 3-0 lead when freshman
Jennifer Mejicanos (Bellflower
HS) lofted a beautiful shot from 30 yards
out that Castro was unable to reach and it
cleared the top of the crossbar and landed into
the net.
The team came out quickly in the second half and scored in
the 48th minute after freshman
Lauren Nanez (La Mirada HS)
dribbled through three Pasadena City (4-3-1,
1-2-0) defenders in the box and sent a touch
pass to freshman
Samantha Smith (Long Beach
Millikan HS), who scored her second goal of
the year. Smith also teamed with Nanez for the
final goal, when Smith scored on a rebound shot.
The Lancers were able to score on sophomore goalkeeper
Laura Ropp (Lakewood HS)
in the 69th minute, as Alexandria Nomura found
herself unmarked and drilled a shot past a
diving Ropp.
"I thought we played well in spurts," said head coach
Ruben Gonzalez. "We continue to try
and move forward with each game. I was a little
disappointed with the fact that we allowed that
late goal, and we're going to try and work on
that in practice. "Playing with confidence is a
key to our success and with a couple of
really tough games coming up, we should be
tested."
