Cerritos College freshman swimmer
Stephanie
Rosero (Downey HS) broke two records
this past weekend at the Pasadena Invitational, as
the Falcons came in sixth place. The top four teams
all finished in a tight pack, with Diablo Valley
College coming in first place with 588 team points,
while Cerritos finished with 168 team points, with
South Coast Conference opponent Chaffey College
ahead of them in fourth place. The team’s divers
will compete this weekend at El Camino College in
the SCC Diving Championships.
Rosero, who
broke the school record in the 50-yard backstroke
earlier in the year with a time of 29.31, set a new
mark with a time of 29.01 and came in second place
in the race. She had two other second place
finishes, including a time of 1:02.56 in the
100-yard backstroke to set a new school record. The
old standard of 1:03.83 was set back in 1979 by Tina
Ford. Rosero also checked in with a second place
finish in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of
2:01.44, while her times in the 100-yard individual
medley (1:04.68) and 500-yard freestyle (5:26.47)
were both good for sixth place.
In addition
to her individual races, Rosero also teamed up to
swim in four relay races, with the best finish
coming in the 800-yard freestyle relay race, as the
team came in eighth place. The time of 8:50.89 was
turned in by sophomore
Daisy
Carrillo (Montebello HS), freshman
Denise Vega
(Montebello HS), sophomore
Salina Mesa
(Montebello HS) and Rosero. The same quartet
placed fourth in the 400-yard medley relay with a
time of 4:28.85, which was good for eighth place. In
the other relay races, Rosero led off both the
200-yard medley relay with Carrillo, Mesa and
freshman
Hannah
Llamas (Gahr HS) coming in 10th
in 2:05.65, while the team of Rosero, Llamas, Mesa
and Carrillo came in 15th place in the
200-yard freestyle relay.
Others who
had good individual performances include Mesa, who
came in ninth place in the 100-yard butterfly
(1:05.05), 12th in the 50-yard butterfly
(28.83) and 22nd in the 200-yard
freestyle with a time of 2:15.39. As for Carrillo,
she had a 20th place finish in the
100-yard individual medley (1:07.66) and 22nd
place in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of
5:50.05, while freshman
Angela Chiaromonte (Schurr HS)
finished in 16th place in the 50-yard
breaststroke with a time of 36.87. The team’s lone
diver, freshman Hilary Baca, placed 11th
in the 1-meter competition.
