For the
third time in three days, the Cerritos
College women's swimming team set a new
school record, as the Falcons finished the
South Coast Conference Championships at
Pasadena City College in third place with
466 team points. They were beaten out by
Long Beach City College, who had 469 points,
while Chaffey College won the title with 815
team points.
Earlier in
the meet, freshman swimmer
Stephanie Rosero (Downey HS)
broke her own record in the 50-yard
backstroke with a time of 28.37, while the
200-yard medley relay team of Rosero,
freshman
Hannah Llamas (Gahr HS),
sophomore
Salina Mesa (Montebello HS)
and sophomore
Daisy Carrillo (Montebello HS)
turned in a time of 2:00.16. On the final
day of the tournament, Rosero set a new
school record in the 100-yard backstroke,
winning the event with a time of 1:01.66.
Again, she broke her old mark of 1:02.66,
which she set at the Pasadena Invitational
two weeks ago.
In other
events, the 400-yard freestyle relay team
of Carrillo, freshman
Denise Vega (Montebello HS),
Mesa and Rosero placed third with a time of
3:57.73. As for Mesa, she posted a third
place finish in the 100-yard butterfly with
a time of 1:02.13. Also swimming well was
Llamas, who came in sixth place in the
1650-yard freestyle in 21:18.43.
For her efforts, Rosero was one of three swimmers who were
named the Tri-Swimmers of the conference
championships. She was joined by Roxanne
Garcera of Chaffey and Jamie Baumler of Long
Beach City. Freshman diver Hillary Baca,
who won the 1-meter and 3-meter conference
championship, was named the Conference Diver
of the Year, while diving coach Glen Myer
was selected the Diving Coach of the Year
for the second consecutive season.
Those that
have qualified will now compete in the state
championships, which will take place next
Thursday through Saturday at Saddleback
College.
