04.04.09 - FOUR RECORDS BROKEN AT PASADENA INVITATIONAL
The Cerritos College women's swimming team is tuning up for their toughest competition of the season and are responding by breaking records. The Falcons, who placed second in the 17-team Pasadena Invitational over the weekend by compiling 586.5 team points, broke four records along the way and were .01 second away from tying another. Over the course of the invitational, both freshmen Jenel Lopez (La Serna HS) and Natalie Peng (Cerritos HS) each broke two school records and won two events.

Lopez broke her own record in the 200-yard freestyle by posting a time of 1:56.77 and finished second in the race. The old record of 1:57.96 was set six weeks earlier. In the 1650-yard freestyle, Lopez won the race with a time of 18:36.75, which obliterated the record of 19:24.55, which was set by teammate Stephanie Rosero (Downey HS) last year. Freshman Brittni Kimura (Los Altos HS) also beat the time set by Rosero, and placed fifth in the race in a time of 19:22.65. Added to her two records, Lopez also won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.13, while teammate Melinda Guevara (Cerritos HS) and Hannah Llamas (Gahr HS) tied for 13th place at 27.24.

For Peng, she broke one of her own records, as well as one set by Lopez. In the 50-yard butterfly, she posted a time of 26.40 to win the race and eclipsed her old mark of 26.60. Peng placed second in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 53.72, but it broke the old record of 53.89 that Lopez set earlier in the year, while Lopez placed fifth in the race in a time of 56.53. Peng came close to tying a third record, but her winning time of 58.12 was .01 second off her record of 58.11.

Freshman Gina Kim (Sunny Hills HS) turned in a trio of third place finishes over the weekend, doing so in the 50-yard backstroke (29.39), 100-yard backstroke (1:04.26) and 200-yard backstroke (2:28.94). In addition, Kim also swam in the 100-yard IM and 200-yard IM. Peng finished in 8th in the 100-yard IM (1:04.43) and Kim in ninth (1:04.55), while Peng posted a time of 2:19.58 for sixth in the 200 IM, while Kim placed seventh in 2:22.51.

Others who swam exceptionally well in the invitational included freshman Bianca Garcia (Bravo HS), who placed sixth in the 50-yard breaststroke (35.23), sixth in the 200-yard breaststroke (3:00.11) and 12th in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:18.89), while sophomore Vivian Aguirre (Downey HS) placed eighth in the 50-yard butterfly (30.32), 18th in the 100-yard butterfly (1:10.46) and freshman Karen Aguirre (Downey HS), who finished 10th in the 100-yard backstroke (1:08.22), 12th in the 50-yard butterfly (30.60) and 13th in the 100-yard butterfly (1:07.25).
