04.18.09 - CERRITOS WINS FIRST CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP
Riding the heels of the school's first water polo championship from earlier in the year, the Cerritos College women's swimming team captured their first South Coast Conference swimming championship on Saturday at Chaffey College. The Falcons, who went 7-0 in conference meets, compiled 666 team points and narrowly beat Mt. San Antonio College, who finished in second place with 655 points. Cerritos will be represented by a large contingent at the state championships, which will take place this Thursday through Saturday at Long Beach City College. The top 16 times in the state each event advance to the state championships.

Freshman Jenel Lopez (La Serna HS) won three events, while breaking two school records along the way. In the 50-yard freestyle, Lopez broke her record of 24.98 by swimming a time of 24.70. Freshmen Melinda Guevara (Cerritos HS) and Bianca Garcia (Bravo HS) finished in seventh and eighth places with times of 26.81 and 27.81, respectively. Lopez regained the school record in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 53.59 to win the event. After teammate Natalie Peng (Cerritos HS) broke Lopez's record earlier in the year with a time of 53.72, Lopez came back in the finals to post a time of 53.59 to take back the record. Sophomore Hannah Llamas (Gahr HS) finished seventh at 57.36, while Guevara placed eighth with a time of 1:00.22.

The third event won by Lopez was the 200-yard freestyle, as she turned in a time of 1:57.16. Llamas finished in eighth with a time of 2:10.85. As for Peng, she won two events and placed second in another. In the 50-yard butterfly, Peng finished in a time of 26.77 to easily beat the competition, while freshman Andrea Garcia (Gahr HS) placed fifth in 29.13. Peng also won the 100-yard butterfly by registering a time of 58.35, which was four seconds faster than the rest of the field. Freshman Angie Silva (Pioneer HS) was an eighth place finisher with a time of 1:10.39. Looking to be a three-time champion, Peng was defeated by Mt. San Antonio's Angela Kanagowski in the 200-yard IM, by turning in a time of 2:12.15 which beat Peng's time of 2:16.34. Sophomore Denise Vega (Montebello HS) was a sixth place finisher after turning in a time of 2:35.65.

Her time of 19:21.31 in the 1650-yard freestyle beat the second place finisher by 16 seconds, with Vega coming in 11th place. In the 500-yard freestyle, Kimura finished in a time of 5:37.50 to come in third place, while Llamas came in 11th place.
