The Cerritos
College women's swimming team, champions of the
South Coast Conference, have advanced three
individual swimmers and four relay teams to the
state championships, which will take place at the
Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach on April 23-25. All
three individuals will compete in three events each,
while two of them will compete in all four relay
races, while the third will swim in three of them.
Freshman
Jenel Lopez
(La Serna HS), who won three conference
championships last weekend, will swim the 50-yard
freestyle, 100-yard freestyle and 200-yard
freestyle. She enters the state championship with
the seventh fastest time in the 200-yard freestyle
(1:56.77), while her times in the 50-yard freestyle
(24.70) and 100-yard freestyle (53.59) are the ninth
fastest in the state. Lopez also holds the school
record in all three events.
Two-time
conference champion
Natalie Peng
(Cerritos HS) is entered in the 50-yard
butterfly, 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard IM. She
holds the school record in both the 50-yard
butterfly (26.40) and 100-yard butterfly (58.11),
which ranks her fourth in the state in the 100 fly
and seventh in the 50 fly. Her time of 1:04.32 in
the 100-yard IM puts her in 21st out of the 22
entries and will be joined by freshman
Gina Kim
(Sunny Hills HS), who is 20th in the state
with a time of 1:04.22.
In addition to her
entry in the 100-yard IM, Kim will also compete in
the 50-yard backstroke and 100-yard backstroke. A
third place finisher in the conference championships
in all three events, Kim ranks 15th in the 50-yard
backstroke (29.13) and 19th in the 100-yard
backstroke at 1:02.73.
Three of the four
relay teams that are entered all hold the school
records with their respective times, but the highest
ranking any of them hold is 10th in the state. The
800-yard freestyle relay team, which is tentatively
slated to be comprised of freshman
Brittni
Kimura (Los Altos HS), Lopez,
Peng and Kim, are ranked 10th in the state with a
time of 8:12.52. As for the 200-yard medley relay
team, their school record time of 1:54.05 ranks them
11th in the state and will consist of Kim, freshman
Bianca Garcia (Bravo HS), Peng
and Lopez. The same quartet will swim in the
400-yard medley relay and are also ranked 11th with
a school-record time of 4:11.31. In the 400-yard
freestyle relay, the tentative team of sophomore
Hannah Llamas (Gahr HS),
freshman
Melinda
Guevara (Cerritos HS), Peng
and Kim are ranked 12th in the state and have a
record time of 3:41.66 to their credit.
