For the Cerritos
College women's swimming team, the first day of the
California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA)
State Championships at Belmont Plaza Pool in Long
Beach didn't result in any team points. But in two
of the three events that the Falcons were involved
in, school records were broken. The team will look
to get on the scoreboard on Friday, which is the
second day of the three-day event.
The highest finish
for a Cerritos swimmer on the first day was a ninth
place result for freshman
Jenel Lopez
(La Serna HS) in the 50-yard freestyle.
Although she turned in a time of 24.76, it wasn't
enough to send her to the finals, which consists of
the top eight times during the consolations.
As for freshman
Natalie Peng (Cerritos HS),
she placed 13th in the 100-yard IM, but did set a
new school record with her time of 1:02.53. Her time
beat the old school record of 1:02.68, which was set
by Laura Luevano in 2001. Freshman
Gina
Kim (Sunny Hills HS), who also
competed in the race, did not place.
The 400-yard
medley relay team of Kim, freshman
Bianca
Garcia (Bravo HS), Peng and
Lopez broke their school record time of 4:11.31 by
placing 11th overall with a time of 4:09.15. The
trio of Peng, Lopez and Kim are still entered in two
more individual races, while the Falcons will also
be swimming in three more relay races.
