After the second
day of the California Community College Athletic
Association Women's Swimming Championships, the
Cerritos College women's team is in 11th place with
89 team points. They earned their points thanks to
three more school record they broke, while two
swimmers placed fifth in their respective races. The
final day of the state championships will take place
at the Belmont Plaza Pool with the Falcons competing
in three individual races and one relay race.
After breaking a
school record on the first day, freshman swimmer
Natalie Peng (Cerritos HS) set
a second record, while freshman
Jenel Lopez
(La Serna HS) each bested another of their
own records in other races. The two also comprised
one half of a relay team that set a new record.
As for Peng, she
placed fifth in the 50-yard butterfly with a school
record time of 26.32, which beat her old time of
26.40. The race turned out to see the top two
finishers break the old state record, while Julie
Maginnis of Sierra College edged her for fourth
place, as she touched up in 26.28.
Lopez also had a
fifth place finish and set a school record in the
200-yard freestyle. Her time of 1:55.74 beat her old
mark by almost a second, while she was just shy of
finishing in third place. The third place time of
1:55.25, while the fourth place time was 1:55.32,
which narrowly edged Lopez.
The third school
record to be beat came in the 200-yard medley relay,
as the quartet of freshman
Gina Kim
(Sunny Hills HS), freshman
Bianca
Garcia (Bravo HS), Peng and
Lopez placed ninth in a time of 1:53.31. It was
faster than their old record time of 1:54.05 they
set in the South Coast Conference Championships.
Kim also competed
in the 50-yard backstroke and placed 15th with a
time of 29.24. The other Falcon relay team to
compete on Friday was the 800-yard freestyle relay
team that came in 10th place. They were comprised of
Peng, freshman
Brittni
Kimura (Los Altos HS), Kim and
Lopez and posted a time of 8:11.94.
