The Cerritos
College women's swimming team opened the 2009 season
by breaking five school records, as they won the
Waterman Festival Relays at Palomar College over the
weekend. Three of the records broken were individual
races, while two were relay races. The Falcons won
the event with 592 team points, while San Diego Mesa
College came in second place with 557 points out of
the seven teams involved. The team will now compete
in the South Coast Conference Pentathlon on Friday
at Chaffey College.
In the individual
races, freshman
Natalie Peng
(Cerritos HS) set a new record in the
50-yard butterfly with a time of 26.77, breaking the
old record of 27.40, which was set 27 years ago,
while she came in first place out of 92 swimmers.
Peng would have also set a new record in the 50-yard
freestyle if it wasn't for freshman teammate
Jenel Lopez
(La Serna HS), as the two finished in the
top two places. Peng turned in a time of 25.28,
besting the school record of 25.43, set by Lynette
White in 1985. But Lopez finished in a time of
24.86, which is the new school standard.
However, in the
100-yard butterfly, Peng did set a new school record
by winning the event in a time of 59.04, besting the
time of 1:00.43, set by Tammy Ferris in 1982. In
fact, it was Ferris' time in the 50-yard butterfly
that Peng also beat.
In the 400-yard
freestyle relay, the Falcons won the event with a
school-record time of 3:49.99, which beat the
29-year-old record of 3:54.43. Swimming that race
were freshman
Gina Kim
(Sunny Hills HS), Lopez, Peng and sophomore
Hannah Llamas (Gahr HS). The
final record that was broken came in the 200-yard
medley relay, which consisted of Kim, freshman
Bianca
Garcia (Bravo HS), Peng and Lopez. They turned in a time of
1:56.48, breaking the old record of 2:00.16 set last
year in the conference championships.
