Although the
Cerritos College women's swimming team has competed
in just two meets this season, eight records have
already been broken, including two that were broken
in the first meet of the season. The Falcons
compiled 1435.5 team points in the 16 events at the
Golden West Sprint Meet on Friday to win the
competition, while five records were broken on the
day. The team will now open South Coast Conference
competition on Friday when they travel to Pasadena
City College to face the Lancers and Mt. San Antonio
College in a three-way meet.
Of the 16 events,
the Falcons won 11 of them with the trio of freshmen
Natalie Peng (Cerritos HS),
Gina
Kim (Sunny Hills HS) and
Jenel Lopez (La Serna HS) all
swimming on the four relay teams that won, while two
of them broke school records. In the 200-yard
freestyle relay, the trio were joined by freshman
Andrea Garcia (Gahr HS) to
post a time of 1:44.14, which eclipsed the old time
of 1:58.15 set in 1985. The other relay school
record was broken in the 400-yard medley relay,
which comprised of the three freshmen, along with a
fourth freshman,
Bianca
Garcia (Bravo HS), and they
registered a time of 4:17.50. It beat the old school
record of 4:21.20, which was set in 1980 and was
three seconds faster than the second place team at
the meet.
Individually,
Lopez broke two school records, including Peng's
record in the 50-yard freestyle that she set in the
first meet of the year. In that event, Lopez
registered a time of 25.08, while Peng had the old
record of 26.77. In the 200-yard freestyle, Lopez
won the event with a time of 1:57.96, beating the
old school record of 1:58.15, set in 1985. As for
Peng, she improved on her school record time in he
100-yard butterfly with a time of 58.11, which was
faster than her old record of 59.04.
As a team,
Cerritos also won two other relay races, which
included Kim, Bianca Garcia, Peng and Lopez in the
200-medley relay race with a time of 1:57.89, while
sophomore
Hannah
Llamas (Gahr HS) joined Kim,
Peng and Lopez to capture the 400-yard freestyle
race in a time of 3:51.37, which was seven seconds
faster than the second place team in the race.
In individual
races, Lopez won three, while Peng and Kim finished
in first in two events. Including her record in the
50-yard butterfly and 200-yard freestyle, Lopez also
won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.53,
while Kim picked up wins in the 200-yard individual
medley (2:24.72) and the 50-yard backstroke in a
time of 30.24.
