The Cerritos College women's swimming team
opened the 2010 season with a strong showing at
the Waterman Festival Pentathlon at Palomar
College over the weekend, while they also came
in third in the team competition. The Falcons
had four swimmers finish in the top seven of the
five-event pentathlon, while their 513 team
points placed them third out of six teams at the
team competition. The Falcons will now get a
week off before they travel to Mt. San Antonio
College for the South Coast Conference
Pentathlon.
Sophomore Jenel Lopez (La
Serna HS), who set five individual records
and was a part of five relay teams that set new
school records last season, finished third out
of the 102 swimmers that took part in all five
events. She posted the fastest time in the
50-yard freestyle (25.35), while her time in the
50-yard breaststroke (33.63) was the
third fastest and her time of 30.67 in the
50-yard backstroke was the fourth fastest. As
for sophomore
Gina Kim (Sunny
Hills HS), who came in fourth place overall
and had a hand in all five of the relay races
that broke records, she swam the fastest 50-yard
backstroke (29.53), while her time of 28.89 in
the 50-yard butterfly was the fourth fastest.
Freshman
Sofia Patronas (Downey
HS) came in fifth place overall and posted
the second fastest 50-yard butterfly with a time
of 28.37.
In the team competition, the Falcons won two
relay events - 200-yard medley relay (1:58.14)
and the 400-yard freestyle relay in a time of
3:52.46, while they placed second in two others.
They placed second in the 350-yard butterfly
relay (4:01.82) and 350-yard backstroke relay
(4:00.51).
As for individual races, only Lopez won a race,
as she captured the 50-yard freestyle in a time
of 25.40, while her time of 1:15.02 was good for
second place in the 100-yard breaststroke. Patronas
turned in a pair of second place finishes, as
she posted a time of 1:01.31 in the 100-yard
butterfly and 2:19.31 in the 200-yard individual
medley. Kim came in second place in the 100-yard
backstroke (1:03.50), while sophomore
Stephanie Rosero (Downey HS),
who holds a pair of school records, came in
third in 1:04.99. Rosero also came in third
place in the 1000-yard freestyle in a time of
12:10.46, while sophomore teammate Brittni
Kimura (Los Altos HS) placed
second in 11:54.61.
