After finishing in 11th place at the State
Championships last weekend, the Cerritos College
women's swimming team found out that four of
their relay teams earned All-American status, as
did three individual swimmers. The Falcons, who
also placed second at the South Coast Conference
Championships, broke all five relay school
records this season, as well as a pair of
individual school records.
Sophomore Jenel
Lopez (La Serna HS) earned
All-American honors in the 100-yard freestyle
and 200-yard freestyle, while she was a member
of all four All-American relay teams. Lopez took
fourth in the 100-yard freestyle at the state
championships this season with a school record
time of 53.34, while her time of 1:55.24 in the
200-yard was a school record and earned her
another fourth place finish. Her times were the
10th-best in the country (200-yard freestyle)
and 12th-best (100-yard freestyle) this year
after earning All-American honors in the 50-yard
freestyle, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard
freestyle and 500-yard freestyle as a freshman.
In her two years, Lopez was named All-American
six times in individual races, along with
swimming on nine relay teams, with the 15
serving as a school record for most All-American
honors.
As for sophomore
Gina Kim
(Sunny Hills HS), she added two more
individual and four relay All-American honors to
the eight she had as a freshman. Her time of
28.76 in the 50-yard backstroke was the ninth
fastest in the country this year, although she
couldn't match that time in the State
Championships, and finished in ninth place.
Additionally, Kim recorded a time of 1:01.76 in
the 100-yard backstroke and placed ninth in the
state, while it was the 15th-fastest time in the
country. She was also a member of all four relay
teams that earned All-American honors this year,
after garnering national recognition in the
50-yard butterfly, 100-yard butterfly and
100-yard IM as a freshman.
In her freshman year,
Natalie Peng (Cerritos HS)
was a member of four relay teams that earned
All-American honors and followed that up this
season with two more relay honors and an
individual race honor. This season, Peng posted
the sixth-fastest time in the country in the
50-yard butterfly with a clocking of 26.62.
The relay teams that earned All-American honors
this season included the 400-yard freestyle
relay team of freshman
Jessica Ku
(Cerritos HS), Peng, Kim and Lopez with
a time of 3:40.52 (11th fastest in the country);
800-yard freestyle relay team of Ku, Lopez, Kim
and sophomore
Stephanie Rosero (Downey HS)
with a time of 8:10.27 (13th fastest in the
country); 200-yard medley relay team of Kim,
Lopez, Peng and Ku with a time of 1:52.82 (14th
fastest time in the country) and the 400-yard
medley relay team of Kim, freshman
Sofia Patronas (Downey HS),
freshman Mehgan Carbajal
(El Rancho HS) and Lopez with a time of
4:07.85 (12th fastest time in the country).
