Getting ready to compete in the South
Coast Conference Tournament, the
Cerritos College women's tennis team had
one final tune-up on Thursday. The
Falcons, who won their third conference
title in four years the day before,
suffered a 6-2 non-conference loss at
the hands of Santa Monica College.
Only
two of the three doubles matches were
played and both were very close. Coming
away with a win was the team of freshman
Sonia Gutierrez (Norwalk
HS) and sophomore
Asha Badal (Mayfair HS),
who posted a 9-7 win in the #2 doubles
match. As for sophomore
Jelaine DeGuzman (Downey
HS)
and freshman
Jessica Zaldivar (Pioneer HS),
they dropped a close 8-6 match in the #3
doubles competition.
In
singles play, DeGuzman posted a 6-2, 6-0
win in the #3 position, while sophomore
Mary Jane Bernardo (Kennedy
HS) picked up a win in the second
set (6-3) after losing the first set,
6-4. In the third set, she dropped a 6-2
decision. In an exhibition match,
freshman
Melody Elizarraraz (John
Glenn HS) registered a 6-2, 6-1,
win.
