Due to some rescheduling, the
Cerritos College women's tennis team
had one more non-conference match
before they compete in the South
Coast Conference Tournament. After
moving the date of the match three
different times, the Falcons finally
hosted Rio Hondo College on Thursday
and squeezed out a 5-4 victory,
which runs their season record to
10-5. Last week the team won their
third conference championship in the
last four years.
The match came
down to the #2 singles play with
freshman
Sonia Gutierrez (Norwalk
HS) coming away with a 4-6, 6-4
(10-6) win over Rio Hondo's Jeanna
Steele. The day also saw top singles
player, freshman
Esther Lee (Cerritos
HS) win her first singles match
of the season, as she registered a
6-4, 6-4 win over Valerie Murillo.
The Falcons, who
lost two of the three doubles
matches, were able to win four of
the six singles matches to secure
the victory. Also winning in singles
play were sophomore
Asha Badal (Mayfair
HS) in the #5 spot, 6-2, 6-3,
while freshman
Jessica Zaldivar (Pioneer
HS) won by the same score in
the #6 position.
In doubles
action, sophomore
Jelaine DeGuzman (Downey
HS) teamed with Zaldivar for an
8-4 in the top doubles match, while
Gutierrez and Badal, along with
freshman
Alyssa Rojas (Warren
HS) and sophomore
Mary Jane Bernardo (Kennedy
HS) each lost by 8-5 scores.
